You are talking about Turin Turambar. He married his sister unknowingly. A very absurd situation broken into feasible scinario's by Tolkien.

I would recommend it. At first, I thought it would be a boring book, but I kept reading on and on and it became really interesting and eventually, I finished it and loved it! Though some parts were hard to understand.

The Ainulindale put me in a comatose state of mind when I first read it. Now however I understand every word, and the meanings behind them that are not observable to the eyes alone.

Just shows - if you stick with something it may pay off.

I think you can tell if you're Tolkien obsessed or not if you like the Silmarillion or not. I LOVE it, but my father, who likes LOTR didn't. But I'm way more obsessed and want to learn everything I can about Arda and everything. So, I think most really obsessed people like it.

I think you are right there, Iritarimel Noramírë. I found that after I read and reread the trilogy and the Hobbit I had questions. I wanted to know more about Glorfindel, Gandalf and especially Arwen and Aragorn. I wanted to know about the history of the elves, and the Silmarilian answers some of my questions but now I want to read more and more. The History of Middle Earth series and the anticipated Chilren of Hurin are on my list to read too.

I would recommend it, I didn't read it in English however, so I have to do that someday. I read it because Tolkien wrote it and because I absolutely love reading stories with Elves. Almost all the books I own have Elves in it. When you love Tolkien's works and Elves you MUST read the Silmarillion.

I read the book 'Writers Uncovered - JRRTolkien' and it really reccomended reading the Silmarrilion, as it explained all the people and the events that led up to the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and now i've decided to buy the book, as it seems worth it.

I know it's off topic but did you know Tolkien had lost both his mum and dad by the age of twelve? :(

I highly reccomend reading 'Writers Uncovered - JRR Tolkien by Vic ?Parker?' I think that's right....

I highly recommend the Silmarillion! I read the first few pages of Ainulindale and skipped it lest I get lostO.o I've read most of it(the first time I read it I had trouble understanding it...but now it makes sense.) and I like it better than the actual Lord of the Rings trilogy!! :-o

Yes, you might need a bit of patience to read through it, but then again you may find it highly addicting...

I thought is is the best of the 5, but the trilogy is of course more thorough. I would recommend the Silmarillion to anyone who likes to read, especially if they have seen the movies.

I have a 12 yr. old cousin who is really into it. You do have to like Tolkien, and you do have to realize that you're not going to fully understand it, and you do have to have patience. All I can say is, START AT THE BEGINNING.

You can't go, "Hmm, this is boring-oooooooh! Beren and Luthien! I know who they are! Let's start there!" like I did. I had not the foggiest idea what was going on! *blush*

I'm glad to see no one has voted "no." I know people have given up on it and said it was boring, but I think either they weren't ready for it or they didn't get far enough into it. The tale of Beren and Lúthien is of course a classic, but there is so much more. I just love the tragedy of Túrin and anything involving Glaurung.

I suggested The Silmarillion to a friend of mine in seventh grade. She saw me reading The Book of Lost Tales II, and wanted to read, too, but I told her to try The Silmarillion first, since anyone would get lost in the HoME series without previewing it. Apparently most seventh graders have a difficulty reading it and quit after the first three paragraphs. (I read it at the beginning of seventh grade and got an A on my related assignment!)

I'd recommend the Silmarillion... it's a bit exhausting to read, yes... but if you read a part a day, it's actually fascinating. It's like my bible...
