Post subject:  Silmarillion. Is it Worth it? Discuss here!
I haven't read the book myself yet, but I own it. I've been putting it off for the longest time, but I don't really know if it's worth the read. I've heard good and bad things about it. What do you think?

Yeah, the Silmarillion is a really good book if you want insights and background information on LotR trilogy. It has been discussed in several threads, so you can take a look at those threads, where people have posted a lot already. Here are a couple of links to some of them:

The Silmarillion was really tough going for me the first time, but I was only 12 or 13 years old. The next time I flew through it! It's amazing! I think any Tolkien fan will enjoy it. I would most certainly recommend it to anyone who's a teenager or older. :-D

I am currently reading it for the first time, and I absolutely love it. It's a wonderful story, or bunch of stories rather. I would definitely say that, if you love Tolkien or LOTR, you should read it! ;)

some people might find it boring or hard to read but it really helps you understand lot r
i luv this book
just try reading it first and if you cant read the whole thing ( i know lots of people do this) just read parts that look interesting :-D

One tip if you are straggling to get through it (because the beginning can get a little tough) Is to skip to 'Of The Return Of The Noldor', which is where the wars, and 'more interesting (exciting)' parts begin.

'Of The Flight OF The Noldor' is also a good place to cut in, because it helps explain the main events leading up to the 'Return' chapter.

That's one thing about the Sil, it's moer a collection of stories than one big story. Of course, the stories are all related, but I guess it wouldn't matter that much if you skipped around a little. I personally can't do that with books, but I know a lot of people who like to read that way.
I would definitely start out with Ainulindale and Valaquenta though, because they tell how everything begins, how everythign was created, how evil took form. They're interesting too, so you probably won't have a hard time getting through them. :)

Yeah. I get confused if I do that in books. Even in ones like the Sil, where the stories separate. They are all conneted, and they all build on one another, so I really hate skipping around. Sometimes they'll mention something that happened in a previous chapter or a chracter that has only been mentioned in a previous chapter, and if you skip around, you have no idea what they're talking about. Still, I would definitely read the Sil though. I dived right into it, but a lot of people think it's boring. I'd tough it out though, even if you think it's a bit tedious at the beginning because it's worth it. :)

I would definitely recommend it! (It is a d, not a t - sorry if i sound snobby or something, but I am a bit of a spelling and grammar nut. lol) It contains a whole bunch of really good stories, plus it explains a ton of stuff that's mentioned in LotR but not really explained - such as where the elves actually go when they sail west, where orcs come from, and all those strange things Gandalf says to the Balrog. And, speaking of Balrogs, it explains them, too. And there's a nifty llist of all the names of characters and places, which is REALLY useful because there are about 6 people whose names start with the same three letters (Fin-).
So, on the whole, everything you've been told is true and it's a wonderful book. I'll shut up now so you can go read it.
