I know Tolkien wrote the story, but who do you think his favorite character was and why? By that I mean a character he just had a lot of fun developing, and felt happy inside as he wrote their dialogue.

So...what do you all think? I'll wait and see before I write who I think it might be.

I believe it was Sam. In a way, Sam was more of a central character then even Frodo as Tolkien concentrates on what Sam's feeling throughout the trip to Mordor.

And I believe Tolkien vaguely hints at it in some of his writings to.

I think some characters he put in that don't have an extreme purpose or effect in the story but are just there because he likes them are:

Tom Bombadil
Goldberry
Legolas
Glorfindel
Elladan and Elrohir (I can't think of those names seperately!)

I think he quite likes Bilbo and definitely all the hobbits in general, because LotR is mostly written from their point of view and he said once that he felt like a hobbit himself. I dunno, the way he describes Bilbo makes me think that he can identify with him.

I think his favorite was Bilbo. I read a biography about Tolkien once and it mentions that he saw Bilbo as being very much like himself.

that's right Aerlinn.. I only thought of LotR characters. But you're definitely right. I think he identified really closely with Beren and also with Beren's and Luthien's story.

Mary-Sue is a term applied to characters who are stereotypically beautiful/powerful/amazing warriors/wise/anything like that. Basically the unbelievably perfect people. Usually, though not always, they are the writer's attempt at placing herself (or occasionally himself) into a story so that they can fall in love with a character of their choosing, but the writer wants to make herself perfect so she does.

Does that meant that Bilbo is his favorite? I mean, if I found a character who was like me, I'm not sure if I'd like him the most.

I think Tolkien liked Hobbits in general the most.

Perhaps...the hobbits WERE the first race he invented.

Well, he started writing stuff from the Book of Lost Tales (which primarily concerns the Elves and the Valar) during World War I, but he didn't write down the famous phrase "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit" until later, when he was an Oxford professor.

Oh wait, I think it might've been the Sil he was working on during WWI...but you get the point, I think. :)

Well, I think that Tolkien probably meant Luthien to be his wife as he saw her. Naturally, seeing as he put women on pedestals, he saw Edith as "perfect" so that's how he wrote Luthien. And then he thought, "well, I'm not as good as she is so I'll make myself a lower species," and he did. Anyway, Beren didn't stay "perfect" if Tolkien wrote him as "perfect" - he lost his hand, remember?

(Thanks! Do you mean the smaller one? Someone left me alone with my own thoughts and that's what happened. :-D )

Well, yeah, it was kind of the way it was back then, I think. I don't know for sure though...

No, I guess it doesn't make him any less perfect, but I was kind of scavenging there, I'll admit it.

Interesting you bring the whole Varda vs. Morgoth up. I hadn't really thought about that before.

Yeah, maybe Luthien is just the Mary-Sue supreme...but it's still a beautiful story so who's complaning? :P

Oh yes, of course Ungoliant! And Shelob! There we go, two. The cycle is broken. :P

(Thanks! Elven Archer made it and she let me borrow it. :-D It describes what I was like a couple days ago...lol)

All of his care and passion seemed to go into creating the Elves and their relationship with Men... but then the Hobbits with their simplicity and unseen bravery make a big impact as well...

Strange. I think it's the most well rounded and thought out/planned characters that are the author's favourite... So I think characters such as Sam are his favourites... 'The bravery of the common man,' as it were. :)

Just a thought.

I think his favorite were hobbits because he was kinda like a hobbit- he loved nature, trees, and he always smoked a pipe!

I don't think Tolkien had a favorite character, but if he did, I think it would be Galadriel.
