i know pretty random.
but i really wished that the ents would find the entwives. do they? or did all teh entwives die even though tree beard says they're just lost.

Who knows? So far as I know, Tolkien never wrote about them finding the Entwives.

Nope, I don't think he did either. I have no idea what happened to the Entwives, but I feel that the Ents were destined not to find them again :(

No. Tolkien didn't mean for such a cruel destiny. Unfortunately, it's a fact of life, and since LotR so consistently represents the facts of life...

^But if Tolkien never specifically wrote of the definite exinction of the Ents, they may still find their Entwives to live happily ever after with them, right? :P

There are actually many loose ends concerning the fate of Middle-earth and its inhabitants after the War of the Ring and the departure of the elves.

well the Entwives established gardens in what became known in later days as the brown lands.They had become enamoured of lesser things like grass and flowers. Then many years after they first left fangorn, war rode over their gardens and fire and sword destroyed them. Therefore it is reasonable to assume that the entwives were destroyed along with their gardens.

true.my gut feeling is that the entwives did die out. however, they could have turned tree-ish and settled in Hobbiton cuz Treebeard wondered if the hobbits had seen any entwives since the shire seemed their sort of place. i really rather that the entwives are still lost rather than have the race of ents just die out.

Where'd you read that? I'd like to see it! Did it happen during the War of the Ring?

Ea, there is definitely still hope! :D I think one of the most attractive things about Tolkien is his loose ends. He doesn't explain everything, he leaves mysteries for us readers to figure out.

It happened before the war of the ring lol. I had a similar discussion on Tolkien forum (only for people who would rather read tolkien than breathe, sleep etc) and I contributed to it. this was the sort of concensus that was reached by the thread occupants.
Also the entwives dont strike me as th etype to go so far north as to reach hobbiton lol.

It's in TTT, Nienor - when Treebeard is talking about the Entwives. And, just so you know, the land where their gardens were was what are now known as the Brown Lands, south of Mirkwood.

Aerandir is right, Treebeard does mention them in TTT. Check out any map of middle earth and you can see where the brown lands are. I think that Aragorn mentions th ebrown lands in FOTR m8.

Could the trees in the Old Forest possibly be Entwives that are very close to becoming plain trees? I mean, they moved and Merry said that they could hear the trees whispering sometimes. Just a thought...

I think it's quite possible that there are, in the Old Forest, a few Entwives turned "tree-ish..."

And yes, Tolkien does leave a lot of loose ends. I read something explaining that once... Tolkien wrote LotR as though it was written by the Hobbits, with information that they gathered and observed. Thus nothing that they couldn't have known is written. They wouldn't have known the Entwive's fate, so it's not there. In the same way the Silmarillion is written sort of from the perspective of the elves, from what they would have learned of the Valar and from observing things.

That's a good thought.
Maybe Tolkien also left behind work that showed it all from the view of men, only it wasn't entire enough to be published...

He might have.

While some Entwives might have made it to the Old Forest and become tree-ish, keep in mind that Elrond? said that when he was young, a squirrel could hop from branch to branch all the way from the Old Forest to where Lothlorien is, and never once touch the ground. So it's been there a while. I'd say it's more likely that some of the trees are becoming Ent-ish than Entwives becoming tree-ish.
