Did you know that he really, really wanted to write the Lord of the Rings trilogy entirely in elvish!! But he never achieved it before he died.

He came to my town last year and gave a talk on elvish at my libary. He sighed my book in elvish and I talked to him for a while. I wish I knew him personally so that I could talk to him more, he knows so much!

Oh, you are so lucky! He's a hero of mine... elvish nerd that I am...

The problem is, Tolkien never finished creating the elvish language, so it would not be possible to translate LotR into elvish without creating a whole lot of new words. And that would be rather sad, because it's always been Tolkien's language, and if it became adulterated with someone else's words...

I know, but still maybe Christopher Tolkien and David Salo could do it together? I mean Christopher must know a lot about elvish since his dad was the writer.

Ohhh, you're so lucky! I would die if I ever met him...or anyone else who's a Tolkienite like that!

I would try translating a bit of it, but my elvish is very basic, and even if I knew enough to actually be able to do the book I wouldn't have the time or anything.

Still, just a random thought, though, would it be possible to start a thread where people go through the books and each translate a line? I'm nto sure if that made sense, I don't know how to explain it.
But, actually, I don't think that would work. It would probably be too much work for people to actually post there.

Yeah I nearly died just talking to him, his book is really informative too.

I'm not sure about that working, considering that the elvish grammar is so different from english grammar. It would be hard just translating a line after line and then putting them together and having them mack sence.

Everyone is talking about the "elvish language", when infact there is Quenya and Sindarin and not just ONE language.

Morwen1379, in which one of these Tolkien wanted to write LOTR?

I don't know, the book I read that in didn't give any particulars. And yes I do know the difference between Quenya and Sindarin. I make a study of them.

I would think Tolkien would have wanted Sindarin. But there's no telling.
That would be cool to print it in Elvish, but first they'd need a 'Learn Sindarin Elvish Fluently' book out or none of us would be able to read it exactly.

Unfortunatly I believe that he never completed Sindarin... or quenya I'm not entirely sure. We should find a way of doing this for him though!

And guys there are tons of learn sindarin + elvish sites try the languages section on the council of elrond or I have a book 'An introduction to elvish' by Jim Allen.

I've got David Salo's 'Gateway to Sindarin'. It's really detailed, espcially with all the linguistical changes of the languages and stuff.
