Some people have told me that Elves cannot feel warmth or cold, while others tell me they can. I'm confused. Any smart people out there who have the answer?

i think they can. i don't know why they shouldn't but however if they can die of cold i think they can also feel it. Beleg was captured on his way to find turin(sil) by some bandits and was bound. they left him and it is said that he was near death of cold and hunger i think when turin returnes.

Elves can feel warmth and cold, for certain, but they probably don't feel it on the same level as we do--I think they'd be more resistant to both of them.

yeah me too. I think they can probably endure warmth and cold better than humans, but I'm sure they can feel them

I have heard many times that Elves cannot feel warmth or cold. I believe that they can, to a certain extent. They are more resistant to them than Men, for example, but they can still be directly affected by extreme heat or cold.

Well, I think that Elves can feel heat keener then men. What leads me to think that is that all of the other senses of the elves are keener. For example they see far better and their smell is good and their emtional senses are off the charts. However I do think that because their bodies seemed to be stroner than the bodies of men that they could resist the heat or cold for longer than men could. So in short what I think is....Elves feel the heat more keenly than men do but that they wouldn't die or such from it as quickly as men would. Though that is just my opinion on the matter and I could allways be wrong about this matter.

yep I think so too. I think they can feel it more keenly, but they are better at enduring it than men.

If you hear that again, would you ask the person who says it to give their reasons? I'm really interested in knowing why they would say it.

As I said earlier, I think Elves feel heat and cold just like Men do, but they aren't as affected by it.

That's strange, I've never heard that they can't feel warmth or cold... Interesting. I think they do, but differently (like everyone else has said). When I saw this post it made me think of His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. Witches aren't bothered by cold and they live for thousands of years. ...

Ugh. Please don't equate Tolkien's elves with Philip Pullman's witches. Many beings in stories aren't bothered by heat/cold and live for thousands of years.

I'm not saying they're alike!! I'm just saying the weird "not feeling cold" thing made me think of PP's witches.

That was what I was thinking when I saw the title of the thread atop the forum. Thanks for sharing it as I would still be looking for that to post. :)

Well, that clears that up quite well.

I have heard the same thing, back in the days that the forums were bustling and hustling with new folks and un-educated Tolkien fans (such as I was myself)

I also heard that they don't "Feel cold the same" as humans. Perhaps less or different? I don't know.

Any validity to any of it or, by the works of Tolkien, are we left with nothing to assume that there is anything different between the way elves percieve and feel such things as opposed to humans and other races?
