When I first read the books . . . before the film, I used to pronounce it as Dun- a- dan ... but in the films they seem to pronounce it as Dun - a - dine (as in din-ing table ) Then i'v also heard it pronounced Dun - a - dain (which sounds like rain ) How do you pronounce it? and is there actually a correct way of pronouncing it anyway? |

I think it's an ú, not a û, Ellie, but I still pronounce it the same as in Nazgûl with an "oo" sound. And I was looking at the pronunciation stuff in the back of RotK, and the plural form of the word is supposed to be pronounced like "doon-a-dine." So the pronunciation in the movie is correct, according to Tolkien's wishes. So Dúnadan is "doon-a-dan" and Dúnedain is "Doon-a-dine." |

The u in Dúnadan is stressed because of the accent mark, so according to usual pronunciation rules it is.. ehh, pronounced the way Aerandir and others already stated. However, I have been a little unsure of the correct pronunciation of Dúnedain, but this explains it, so thank you! Mrs_Elijah_baggins, how come your signature doesn't show up in your first post??? *huge astonishment* |

Well Dúnadan is the singular form and Dúnedain is plural so it slightly depends on the number what way you pronounce it. |

So Dúnadan is "doon-a-dan" and Dúnedain is "Doon-a-dine." I guess you're right about that, Aerandir. Anyway, all people here in Germany pronounce it like that. So I didn't think about it before. |

For Dúnadan (singular) I say DOO-na-dan (same as everyone else). For Dúnedain (plural), I agree that it ought to be doo-nuh-dine, but I'm used to pronouncing it doo-na-dane, because that's how my Dad said it when he read me the books. *shrug* |

So Dúnadan is "doon-a-dan" and Dúnedain is "Doon-a-dine." tis is Aerandir, so by principle it must be right -ish. But I think its really up to you how you pronounce it. Whatever feels best to you. |

I pronounce it correctly. Sorry... couldn't resist Actually I didn't pronounce the plural form correctly for years... back in the [gasp] 1970s. But then the constructed Silmarillion was published... and ah... well I still didn't pronounce it correctly. But sometime after that... |

I also had the pronounciation of 'Saruman' wrong for many years. |
