Post subject:  Legolas and Gimli
I recently read in A Guide to Tolkien, that Gimli sailed with Legolas to the Undying lands. He must have been given a great honor by the HIgher elves first I think... Like Bilbo and Frodo did. Cos its very rare for races apart from Elves and Wizards to sail there isn't it?

yeah. Bilbo, Frodo - and later on Sam as well were the only Hobbits and Gimli was the only Dwarf to ever sail to the Undying Lands I believe.

Right. Galadriel interceded on Gimli's behalf, if I remember correctly, and he was permitted to sail to Valinor. Frodo, Bilbo, and Sam were likewise the only hobbits to ever go there.

aw I think its really nice that Gimli got to go.. I lvoe how the two's relationship grew through the whole book an film. How Gimli only went to keep an eye on the elf cos he didnt trust him... but towards the end... he trusted him with his life... aww it brings a tear to my eye :'( :)

I know. Their relationship is really unusual, but a very nice relationship. Yeah ur right Aerandir, Galadriel interceded on Gimli's behalf so that he could come to Valinor. I think it's great to have such a strong relationship bewteen an elf and a dwarf.

It's very symbolic, kind of. The Elder races are overcoming their differences, and fading away in the wake of the Younger Children--the Men.

yeah I also think it's a very symbolic friendship. Also because Iluvatar said to Aule that there won't be much of a friendship between his children and Aule's children

Yep. I think that's one of the things that is so cool about Legolas' and Gimli's friendship--they were naturally opposed to each other.

Yeah exactly. And still they managed to become friends - even though they didn't really like each other in the beginning. I think it's really good that there also is a friendship between an elf and a dwarf, because that way you can see that the distance between elves and dwaves doesn't have to be a distance you can't get across.

Yes. That friendship has been one of my favorite things of Tolkien's works. It's so.....cool and inspiring.

Yeah I can only agree with you. I think the friendship between Legolas and Gimli is a friendship we can all learn from. Because in the end we're all humans and even though we've been raised differently we can still be friends.

The privelege to go to the undying lands was originally for elves only , but I guess for Gimli, bilbo, Frodo and Sam. because of what they did were made the exceptions. How cool that a dwarf, who usually have a serious beef with elves should be one of the few exceptions.

Yep. Very cool. Of course, We have to wonder--did Frodo, Sam, Bilbo, and Gimli live on in the Undying Lands, or did they pass away just as everyone else did? I can't make up my mind on that matter.

neither can I. Somehow I kinda feel that they've lived on forever like the elves did.. but on the other hand it was said that Valinor doesn't make mortal people immortal

My feelings exactly. I feel as though they'd be immortal there, but it's not the place that makes the people, it's the people that make the place, so I think (however reluctantly) that they would probably die there regardless.

I think they died, but I like to think they died in bliss at least.Valinor would take away their cares and burdens, which is sort of the least They deserved methinks.
