Which of the Valar taught Gandalf before he was sent to Middle Earth? Does it ever mention who?

I believe what you mean Leonder is which Vala Gandalf "belongs to" and I think he was one of Manwe's Maiar.. I'm not sure though

Yeah, I think Olórin was one of Manwë's Maiar.

I think I remember a mention of his learning something from Nienna, as well.

Yeah, that sounds right, Velcayelde--I seem to remember something along those lines as well.

Yeah I think it says that he dwelt in Nienna's house for a long time and from her he learned pity I think.

Yeah--that's what I thought. That's why I hesitated a little before replying to this topic at first--I thought he was Manwë's, but I also thought that he was somehow affiliated with another Vala.

Gandalf was a Maia of Manwe indeed but he lived in Lórien. His path would however often lead him to the house of Nienna and from her he learned wisdom and pity. It is said that he was the wisest of the Maiar.

I had no recollection of the "affiliations" beyond the Moon and Sun maiar. Sauron was obviously with Morgoth, Saruman I am not sure of.

Our information is coming from The Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-earth, Feanaro. In there, Christopher Tolkien enclosed an essay that his father wrote, called "Of the Istari." It contains a lot of information about them that is found nowhere else, except maybe in the Letters. That's where it talks about affiliations, which, in this case, is really just who the Maiar choose to spend their time with.

I think Saruman was one of the Maiar of Aule, wasn't he??
The essay about the Istari in the UT is really good, I agree with you, Aerandir.

Yeah, I think you're right, Fíriel, that Curunír was one of the Maiar of Aulë.

Sauron was at first one of the Maiar of Aule, too. That's why he knew about all this stuff about rings etc. He however was seduced by Morgoth then and changed sides(or whatever the right expression is )
