What do you picture as Valinor?

Do you think that it would be like any place in Middle-Earth and what would the Hobbits have done there bar be at peace?

I think it is pretty hard to picture Valinor, because it's not a place that can be reached by mortal men. I think the place most similar to it would be Lothlorien because of the mellyrn.
I think the hobbits would've had a lot of things to do and explore there, especially in the beginning. There are so many different sorts of plants and animals there. Also the Valar live there and some of the elves who were part of the journey from Cuivienen, like Ingwe the king of all elves.

Intersting thought...but in a world of elves how could the Hobbits have found happiness without their own culture?

Hmm...I've always pictured being Valinor as a much more intense version of Middle Earth. Sort of like the way C.S. Lewis describes our earth- a shadow of heaven.

I don't think that sadness existed for the hobbits. After all Valinor is not just a world of elves, but also of the Maiar and the Valar. And Valinor must be such a beautiful land that I'm sure the hobbits were able to find happiness. And there were several hobbits in Valinor so if they ever wanted to talk to a hobbit, there was someone they could talk to.

Well, in the end, Frodo, Sam, and Bilbo were all in Valinor, but they were the only three hobbits. The only other beings there would have been Elves, Maiar, Valar, and Gimli, who must have felt really apart.

well yeah. But Gimli had his best friend Legolas and Galadriel was there as well. You don't have to have your own culture with you to be happy. I don't think that Gimli was forced to go to Valinor, but that it was his decision to go there, so he must've had some reasons for leaving Middle Earth and his fellwo dwarves.

Yes. Culture isn't as important as Friends. I think Gimli and the Hobbits would have been quite happy there.

Yeah. He probably was somewhat resented, at least at first.

Well yeah. I must've been pretty weird for all the Elves (except for those like Galadriel who knew Gimli) and also for Gimli himself. Valinor is not anything like the place where he used to live before the War of the Ring. I also think it must be pretty weird for the elves to have mortal people showing up at Valinor.

yeah I agree with you. Elves and Men both were children of Iluvatar and the Elves and the Edain were friends, but Elves and Dwarves don't really seem to fit to each other and there hasn't been much of a friendship between them.

Which was due to Aulë making the Dwarves without asking Ilúvatar--remember, Ilúvatar told Aulë that there would be strife between his Children and Aulë's or some such thing--so the aggression between Elves and Dwarves is something that they themselves are not even responsible for. They're born that way, apparently.

yeah exactly. The more astonishing it is that a dwarf was accepted to live in Valinor I think.

Yeah--it really shows how strong Legolas and Gimli's friendship was. :)

and how powerful Galadriel was. At least I've read something that she also wanted Gimli to be let into Valinor.

^Yes, I think it was largely thanks to her that he got in (reminds me of a letter of recommendation like people get for colleges and jobs :))
