I'm currently writing a lotr fanfiction which takes place in modern-day earth. I've done a lot of research that says that Tolkien meant for Middle-earth to have taken place on our earth, just at an imaginary time period.

However, today I got an unpleasant flame which states that Tolkien wrote his stories in a world other than ours and that I obviously did not do enough research.

Did I find faulty research, or was the flamer misinformed? I just want to make sure.

As far as I know, the flamer was misinformed, and you had the correct research. I would like to agree with the flamer, because I don't like the idea that we're in modern-day Middle-earth, but so far as I know, Tolkien did intend for this to be in Middle-earth, in around the Sixth Age of the world.

yeah same here. I don't like the idea that we live in a modern day Middle-Earth, because Middle-Earth is so much better than the world today. But as far as I know you had the correct research Luiniel.

While modern day Earth isn't all that similar, it should be quite easy to see that the geography is very close to Middle Earth's.

well yeah, that's true. I still don't like the thought that our earth is supposed to be a modern day Middle-Earth.

Just to clear things up, in my story, archeologists find some remains from Middle-earth and a story takes place around this event.

I realized I made it sound as if it was the same old "lotr in modern day" earth stories.

Faulty flamer, definitely. I totally recall reading that Tolkien wanted LotR to be in an imaginary time period on Earth in The Magical Worlds of the Lord of the Rings.

I don't think he wanted it to be an "imaginary" time exactly, but I know he wanted to create English myths that were totally unique to his country.

Hm. I like Tolkein's idea about Middle Earth being our world...I love the idea actually...but at the same time, doesn't seem like there is a place it would fit in with recorded history.
:P
Alright, I'm being the practical killjoy.

I was just wondering how that was supposed to work. Although, it is sort of nice just not to think about it and to simply imagine it actually happening. :D
