Unfortunately, Tolkien is not 'in' LotR in that sense of the word, so we still couldn't keep him alive longer, even if we could change anything in LotR.

So I still wouldn't change anything.

More on the Arwen/Aragorn love story
Get inside the character's head- what were they doing before the Ring was found and what was the journey like for them.

I would include more about the Valar. In the books, Tolkien had some references to them: one of Oromë, many of Elbereth, one of Elbereth as Varda, one of Manwë as the Eldar King, and a few of the Valar. There was only one reference to the Valar in the movies, and none of any specific Valar. If anyone else out there is a Valar geek like I am, I would like to hear you points of view on that, since any changes of the sort could switch the power from Frodo and the Ring to the Valar and whether they would choose to interfere and overthrow Sauron like they did Morgoth.

Yeah...more on the Valar.

Also that the Shire doesn't change at the end of the books. That part was one of the most depressing for me...I liked how the movies showed that Saruman died while still at Orthanc.

Yeah, it was really saddening to discover after the long, hard journey that the one place you thought would be untouched was one of the places most fouled, if you know what I mean. Yeah, was nice how in the movie the Shire was green and beautiful and its people simple and happy.

More Faramir. Those were definitely my favorite parts of the book; it was nice to have someone who was so noble, yet human.

Well, this is just my opinion, but I found the part very important for several reasons.
First of all, it shows that the happy ending was not so perfect after all (I am not a fan of totally happy endings..). But what is more important, I think, is that it shows how the hobbits have grown during their quests, because they behave quite different from how they did before their journey.
Also, it shows very well how the power of Saruman works. Because his changes to the Shire were in his opinion improvements, because they make the Shire more "efficient". But in fact all he does is harm the environment, the Shire as a land and its people, the hobbits. I think it also shows really well that life can become so convenient for people that they don't even know how to change bad things and maybe it can also be associated with the change Tolkien saw in the environment in which he grew up.

^I agree with you. I liked the fact that they went home and it wasn't just "happily ever after. The end," like most stories seem to be. It threw something different into the mix, and reality as well.

Yes it did, I agree with you. But I am a fan of happy endings and I like both. The book ending has a lot more meaning - the movie ending is just more comforting I guess (for me).

that the ents found the ent-wives...but that would mean that everything went back to normal which isnt reality... so... i'd like there to be a little more humor... hobbits in their essence... cuz i cant seem to get enough of em. :D

I wouldn't change anything. its nearly perfect story. if there was no romance, deads, tears or any thing else, it wouldnt be so perfect. the emotions in the story are so real. I mean, if there were only deads on the "bad side" it would be maybe a nice tale, but quite a bit boring.

so I would keep everthing like this.

(sorry for my english... )

Hmm...good point, Ardanwen, it IS pretty much perfect on its own. :D
But I wish I knew what happened to the Ent-wives... even if it was a bit sad, I still would like to know. Hmm, I wonder if Mr Tolkien knew himself?

perhaps not. but if he know it, maybe he thought it was not important enough to tell.

I suppose they never found the end wives.
they sad it was the LAST march of the ents, so I think after that they returned to Fangorn Forrest and do nothing.

maybe the younger ents would go out for searching. but I think they would never do....

I think I would keep Frodo as the Happy character he is in the beginning of the book, instead of the sad character he becomes. He was such a fun guy at first...
