HiHi.
I was just wondering while watching LOTR(again) and i just wondered,besides being some love token,what exactly is the Evenstar?And when it grows dimmer,it means Arwen is turning mortal(in movie)??

Actually, in the book there's no really mention of the Evenstar has seen in the movie.
Tolkien just mention a jewel Arwen wore around her neck and that she finally gave to Frodo at Minas Tirith, saying that (stop me if I'm wrong) it will basically help him to go to Valinor, thus he's sorta taking her place on the ship...

Nessameldë, you're right, except, from the way I interpreted the part where Arwen gives the jewel to Frodo, it merely symbolizes her giving him her place in Valinor, but has no actual quality that will aid him.

Well, to be honest, I don't think his pain and weariness would trouble him nearly so much when he was in Valinor. I imagine that they would be pretty far from his mind, most of the time. Of course, his ill memories would take more time to heal, so the jewel might have helped with reminding him of the better things of Middle-earth, as well.

yeah I agree, but I think while Frodo was still in Middle-Earth the Evenstar might have helped him to ease his pain and weariness a bit, because while he was still in Middle-Earth I think he was troubled a lot by it and the Evenstar might've reminded him that there's still a chance for him to be healed and that he also made good experiences on his quest.

I thought the Evenstar fading meant that Arwen was dying.

yeah, the way it's explained in the movie it does really look like that. Of course you could also say it's because Arwen became mortal, but the way Elrond says that the light of the Evenstar is fading and that Arwen is dying implies that the fading of the Evenstar represents that Arwen was going to die

hmm yeah and I don't actually see a special connection between Arwen and Sauron/the Ring that would make her weak but not the others. I mean, if she had been the keeper of one of the three rings that'd have been a different thing.

I didn't think that Arwen was becoming mortal. In the book that is. I don't remember her being given the choice by the Valar. And when she said that she made the same choice as Luthien, I think she ment that it was to wed a mortal. She did live longer than Aragorn. I think it says she went back to where Lothlorien was.
