Okay, Arsarniel has been all wrapped up in preparations for a short trip to summer camp, so it now falls on me to post these. :)

1) Who in Middle-Earth might have created the "many paths...most [of which] were cheats and deception and led nowhere or to bad ends", and can you think of an exciting possible back-story to them?

2) Why in the name of Gandalf's pointy hat would a wise wizard like Gandalf forget to keep watch and allow the party to be put in such danger?

3) The goblins in this story seem (to me at least) to be milder. If Tolkien had written songs (jeering ones) for LotR, how do you think he might've made them different? Or do you have any other comments to make on these goblins vs. the orcs in LotR?

4) Are you beginning to notice any difference in the exciting action pieces found in the Hobbit compared to, say, FotR? If so, what do you notice?

5) The small witticisms in The Hobbit can be quite amusing. Which ones have especially come to your attention as especially funny, etc?

Yeek - I'm not so good at making "exciting" back stories. I'm thinking of Dwarves, although I have no reason why I think so. But it just doesn't seem Elf-like to do that, so I've ruled out Elves.

2) Why in the name of Gandalf's pointy hat would a wise wizard like Gandalf forget to keep watch and allow the party to be put in such danger?
Grr - Gandalf is not acting like he's supposed to be! It must be his pointy hat! Brain cells have escaped out through his ears and flown away!

3) The goblins in this story seem (to me at least) to be milder. If Tolkien had written songs (jeering ones) for LotR, how do you think he might've made them different? Or do you have any other comments to make on these goblins vs. the orcs in LotR?
Oh - I do agree that everything in The Hobbit is, on a scale of how frightening it all is, The Hobbit seems much more brighter and less dense than LotR. Or maybe it's because since there's the movie for LotR and not the movie for The Hobbit (yet) . . . I'm making no sense. I've already lost my train of thought.

4) Are you beginning to notice any difference in the exciting action pieces found in the Hobbit compared to, say, FotR? If so, what do you notice?
Not so much . . . Action pieces? Can somebody clarify?

5) The small witticisms in The Hobbit can be quite amusing. Which ones have especially come to your attention as especially funny, etc?Actually, what I find strange rather than funny is the change of behavior in Gandalf. He seems less - how should I say this - alert. Then again, he's younger in The Hobbit, and age always seems to play a significance in things - whether you're younger or older. :bye2:

I think these paths are very old. Maybe they were save once, bet the world is changed.

I agree with Elbereth!

I think this chapter was not as funny as the ones before. My favourite is chapter two. Trolls! :-D

They could have been made long ago for some important thing then the evil creatures took it over. Then again ithe path may have been a trap set to catch creatures in. Who knows.

2) Why in the name of Gandalf's pointy hat would a wise wizard like Gandalf forget to keep watch and allow the party to be put in such danger?

I think he was trying to let them fend for themselves or show them he may not always be their. And he did come thru in the end.

3) The goblins in this story seem (to me at least) to be milder. If Tolkien had written songs (jeering ones) for LotR, how do you think he might've made them different? Or do you have any other comments to make on these goblins vs. the orcs in LotR?

In a way they seem far more dangerous and smart then the orcs.

4) Are you beginning to notice any difference in the exciting action pieces found in the Hobbit compared to, say, FotR? If so, what do you notice?

There is defentially not as much action as FotR right now at least. But they do seem to be falling from one danger into the next.

5) The small witticisms in The Hobbit can be quite amusing. Which ones have especially come to your attention as especially funny, etc?

Gandalf defentially he seems far different in some ways then he did in FotR more calm, odd, and a bit of peaceful old man. But very alert too. So in a way he seems different.

I am thinking goblims?? Not sure. Maybe even one of the ancient Elven kings?? Maybe Feonor? But it doesnt seem like elves would want to build paths, they like to leave nature alone and build around it usally. Probally the race of man for travoling reasons

2) Why in the name of Gandalf's pointy hat would a wise wizard like Gandalf forget to keep watch and allow the party to be put in such danger?

Not every ones perfect even wizards such as Gandalf.

Well first off lets rember that The Hobbit was written to be a childerns book. Tolkien probally wanted to give you that idea that evil creatures, were not as bad as they were in LoTR time.

4) Are you beginning to notice any difference in the exciting action pieces found in the Hobbit compared to, say, FotR? If so, what do you notice?

hmmm, I notice how he describes it.

5) The small witticisms in The Hobbit can be quite amusing. Which ones have especially come to your attention as especially funny, etc?

My Precous! J/K I would say all the riddles they make me laufgh becuase I get so confused, im not good at riddles.
