Oooh, good luck on SAT. So to sum up.. it seemed like people liked this layout: ~The Shire to Tom Bombadil ~Tom Bombadil to Rivendell ~Rivendell to Lothlorien ~Lothlorien to the end of FotR ~Parth Galen to Meduseld ~Meduseld to Isengard ~Emyn Muil (Frodo and Sam) to Henneth Annun ~Henneth Annun to Cirith Ungol ~Minas Tirith to Pelennor Fields ~Pelennor Fields to the Black Gate ~Cirith Ungol to the Field of Cormallen ~The Field of Cormallen to the Grey Havens. And then perhaps have a general thread for random comments. Also, did we want to set up deadlines? If only then only tentative. Can't wait to get started.

ALL RIGHT THEN.
The only concern I have with my previously suggested layout is creating a bajillion new threads; the other option would be having a thread per 'book' (as in, 6 threads altogether.) But if no one else thinks too many threads is a problem we'll stick with the first layout.
Regarding deadlines: I was thinking weekly deadlines would work best; that way if some people work a lot some days they can catch up on their days off, etc. It's more flexible than saying something like 'a chapter a day!'. So how about for the first week we get to ''The Old Forest.' Two weeks per book would mean a twelve week long reread. Y/Y?
Chime in quickly with your thoughts and let's try get the first thread up and going tomorrow! I'm also going to search around for any study guides and see if they have any interesting thoughts/questions to offer.

I like the tentative deadlines that you put up as a timeline, Minuialwen! I also think that six threads would be better for per book, so we do not create a bunch of new threads in which might not be used anymore after twelve weeks or so, ya know?

Personally, I'd think threads for each part would be better. It's only 12 as compared to 6, so not a huge amount. And people trying to discuss one section wouldn't have to wade through other things to find people they're replying to. If you're splitting it into sections, it only makes sense to have threads for each section. Otherwise, there's not really much of a point of splitting up the books.

^I agree. And I didn't imagine that the book discussions necessarily should have any long-lasting qualities. Maybe they will, but like Nurr said, then we've got the other book sub-forums to discuss topics in each book. I hope this can be an opportunity to discuss all the small things and lesser topics in this reading group, and share the experience of reading the books with fellow fans more than having the long serious discussions on elven immortality - though of course there is room for everything. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this and I think we should just get started so people can start posting, so Minuilwen, I'm excited about your first thread.

Oh, it's actually in Doriath (Misc Book Discussion) and it's titled 'ESSR: The Shire to Tom Bombadil.'
