I have seen all films, read the Silmarillion and have done my share of research on Middle Earth and everything in it. However I never got to reading the actual Lord of the Rings books. I was wondering how different the books and movies were?
I'm aware that the books are better and movies leave out details. But story wise did the movies leave out important events or made changes I should know about?
(Sorry for the long post.)
P.S. I plan on reading those books myself soon. I'm just curious at the moment.

My advice is to read The Lord of the Rings first [before reading any responses here or elsewhere], especially as you plan to read the books soon in any case.

I know that's not very helpful but opinions about differences or 'faithfulness' vary widely, and a mere list of changes (even if somewhat subjective as to what constitutes a 'change' or what is important), will possibly contain book spoilers.

A long post? I guess it's relative :)
