I was eight when FotR came out. I actually started LotR with TTT because that's the one my dad brought home from the video store, then I watched FotR, and RotK when it was released (though not in theatres). The craze I experienced was purely of the online community, since that was when I started web designing and ran my LotR fansite. But even that was awesome! I'm actually glad The Hobbit is happening now because I get to be a conscious part of it. ^^

I was *just* old enough to convince my parents to let me queue at the midnight screening. But that was only due to the tiny town we lived in. I remember though, when after x amount of years some publisher decided to re-translate the LotR books and they ruined them. I hate reading translated books to begin with, but the second time around they directly translated all the names. Ew. I can get Swedishing the up a bit, like Baggins became Bagger, etc. But Baggins in the newer versions became literally what it means, which is just. No.

I feel like translating the names would be really strange...how do some other names translate?

Gosh, I haven't read it in Swedish in *so* long. But I believe it's mostly last names. I mean, Frodo is still Frodo and Aragorn is still Aragorn. But I believe that in the newer translation they completely changed Baggins, Brandybuck, Took, etc. And probably the other hobbit names too, although I don't think they changed Gamgee. It just seems so awkward. I can understand giving them a Swedish ring, for everything to make a bit more sense, like in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Gilderoy Lockheart is Gyllenroy Lockman. Just because it's easier to pronounce and read as a young child.
But with LotR they're not aimed for little kids anyway, so there's no point at all in translating the names. And Barliman Butterbur was at least called Barliman Smörblomma in the old version, but in the new translation it's Malte Smörblom. Which isn't a Swedinized name, but a completely new one. Eew. So awkward. And they've re-translated the different places and the One Ring poem and it's just noooo!

Ohhh that does sound quite terrible. Is Swedish difficult to learn, in your opinion? I'm a language buff and naturally, I'm interested in learning Swedish one day as well. It looks like such a beautiful language. What other language is it most similar to?

Yeah, it is hard. We've got plenty of sounds you don't so no matter how fluent you got it'd never sound completely Swedish. xD But it's a fine language, in my opinion. You'd definitely be somewhat helped by English sometimes. But the language is most like Norwegian or Danish.

In Poland, in one translation, which is already withdrawed, the names were also translated. I have version without translated names and holy moly, I think I won ticket on lottery. I tried to read some paragraphs with this "bad" translation but couldn't go through it.

Yeah I have the original translation too. They've still changed some names and whatnot, but they all fit so much better.

You'd definitely be somewhat helped by English sometimes. But the language is most like Norwegian or Danish. I'm bilingual in English and Korean, and I'm studying Spanish and French now. I've only been exposed to German of the Germanic languages because I had to sing a lot of German songs in choir. I think with enough practice and exposure to fluent speakers accurate pronunciation can be acquired, though through a lot of work. I'm encouraged by the fact you appreciate your own language though! I know so many people who like to disparage their native language in favor of another but I think all languages are beautiful and worth studying so I'm never in agreement with them. I haven't even met very many Swedish people or people who come from Swedish backgrounds...I had classmates who were Dutch, Danish, and Norwegian, but I can hardly remember anyone who was Swedish! I just remembered. My facial soap comes from Sweden. Lanolin-Ägg-Tvål. Wow I feel like such a noob. My closest connection to your country is through a soap. T___T

I was 17 when I first read LotR, and generally when I started liking Tolkien's books as well as PJ's LotR movies. Shame it happened so late, but well, better later than never

^ And I thought 12 almost 13 was late! I was a fan for 2-3 years before I actually read the books.
Yay me.

I don't think it matters how old you are or when you decided to read the books, because as long as you share that passion with many others, it's a beautiful thing all the same. It's not a competition measuring the devotion one has to a piece of literature...it is simply nice to know where we all come from in sharing this love of LotR together.

I didn't create this thread because it matters, just out of curiosity.
