(I couldn't find a topic like this, I hope it's ok to place it here since it didn't feel like it fit in the separate book sections when it's about all of them.)
I was ten, barely, when I read them for the first time. And that would be 14 years ago. Or well, nearly 15 years ago.

^ We couldn't afford them before I turned 10, when our family got a bit more money due to my mom getting re-married. It's so awkward, but before the movies the books were really difficult to get your hands on in Sweden, so when I wanted to read them (after an uncle of mine telling me about them) you could only buy them in bigger cities and they were sooo expensive. Gosh, times have changed.

Back then, I believe it was my piano teacher who got me interested. Were they easy for you to read?

^ That's a good piano teacher! Yeah, very. I'm an extremely fast reader (so much so that I got teased for it, I mean, eh? What a thing to be teased for haha) and uh, well, I used the books (along with a lot of other books) as a means to escape from my really horrible childhood. When I was reading I was among friends, when I wasn't I had to live my own life. As pathetic as it sounds.

I was 16 after years of trying.
The FotR film came out when I was 10. Kept trying to read LotR after that but kept getting stuck after the Council of Elrond. Over the years I was able to read further but, and partly because I knew the story from the films by them, I would get to the beginning of book 4 (second half of Two Towers) and give up.
I am dyslexic and dyspraxic and some writing styles I really struggle with. Tolkien's writing style was one of the ones I struggle with but then suddenly on yet another attempt of the book (I'd been trying at least twice a year and always getting stuck) something just clicked and I was able to read it fine.
I've had it with other authors as well, where I've attempted to read them many times and couldn't get on with the writing style and then one day something clicked and I was able to read them. Jane Austen clicked when I was 19, Charlotte Brontë when I was 15, Emily Brontë was 20, George Elliot and Thomas Hardy when I was 16, and I can't remember the others. I do know that I've give up with Charles Dickens at least for many years. That was torture trying to read him. Most of those I've been trying to read since I was 12/13. So years of trying.
I hate my brain.
Anyway, so LotR I was 16 and then I read the Hobbit for the first time after finally finishing LotR. The Silmarillion was another couple of years before I managed to read that cover to cover but I'd dipped in and out of it so I'd already read most of it anyway.

^ At least you got through it. I was six when I started "reading" our copy of the Hobbit, and finally got through it at seven.

Ugh. I'm GOING to read it. I'm going to say this in advance, I'm going to read LotR for the first time when I'm 13. *sighs* EraiS is determined to keep it until a bit after my 13th b-day.

I read LotR for the first time in Dutch when I was 12, and then a year later in English. Reading it in Dutch took me less than a week, but for the first time in English took me almost a month. I read the Hobbit for an English book report when I was 14, and I'm still working on reading all chapters of the Sil (I tend to skip parts).

I read LotR my freshman year of high school, so I was fourteen. I had tried to read them when I first watched the films but I couldn't grasp Tolkien's language (I was nine/ten then). Then I read The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales. I have a diary entry dating back to when I finished the Sil and wrote my thoughts on it (I have it written down that I finished it on January 6, 2008).

I remember being bullied for attempting to read the Hobbit at school. Because apparently only "retards" pretended to read books when they were six and I was just showing off. Well, too bad I was just way more advanced than you were, punks! xD

I tried when I was 6 but I didn't like it at all. I learned to read fantasy when I was 13 and read first Tolkien book when I was 16/17 (something in the middle).
