Post subject: Interesting thought about Saruman Posted: November 19th, 2005, 4:52 pm |

Most of you who have read the Silmarillion know that Saruman was a member of the Istari and all, I find it odd that when Saruman rebelled that the Valar did not take action seeing as how he was a personal messenger and all. Just a thought

I'm not quite sure I know what you mean. But this is what I will say-
After recreating Arda, and moving Valinor across the Sea, the Valar did not meddle in the business of the people in Middle-earth. They were probably angered that Saruman was rebelling, but what could they do? That is why they sent Gandalf, and many of the other Istari to help stop him.
They did do something about it, but not directly.
I'm not quite sure if that is completely right, because I haven't read The Silm in a while.

saruman turned against the valar, but if they had removed him themselves, it would be somewhat of overkill don't you think, and i'm sure the valar knew he would simply fall into place in history, becoming a wasted spirit wandering about in eastern lands

It's interesting that the Valar couldn't defeat Morgoth in the First Age when they were so many and he was...just one... well, just a thought. But the history of Middle-earth would have been so dull if they actually had done so.
Yes, the Valar sent five istari to Middle-earth to aid the people against Sauron. Ilúvatar gave free will and choice to anything he created so Saruman was free to do what he did. The Valar was too distant to interfere and as Larael said they wouldn't be meddling with ME buisiness anymore and the rest of the istari didn't realize Saruman's change before it was too late and he had become too powerfull through Sauron.

I came across this brilliantly done write-up by Jeff LaSala about Saruman that contains a nice synopsis of the tale of the Istari and events around them. He uses the books canon, and adds thoughts from the movies as well. I recommend reading it through! The Unquiet Voice of Saruman

Great article! Thanks for sharing the link. It certainly provides food for thought regarding the Istari and their relationships with each other.
