The Silmarillion has to be the best history book I've ever read! =D I've still got a little bit to go (I'm not really reading it in order), which is the first 'chapter' 
Definitely worth a read, it's not boring -at all!- Well... at least for me it wasn't o_O |

Yes, I love the Silmarillion!! It's just absolutely amazing. It has so many wonderful stories, too.

It is good. An it is extra good in that you can start at a random chapter and still wont fell like you've missed something. And you can re-read it in a random order.

If you like the Silmarillion, take it to the next level and try out the Book of Lost Tales. Now it is writ in olden English, but if like the Silmarillion, you pick it up quite quickly. I'm on part 2 right now, and just finished the Fall of Gondolin. And unlike the Silmarillion, it paints a more beauteous picture of the city of 7 names, before it describes its vivid rape by Morgoth's evil. Highly recommended if you like the Silmarillion, and it just adds another layer to it, and yet in a different, and at times radical, way. ^^ |

I just started Part 1 of the Book of Lost Tales. I love it so far!! It's very interesting. Like you said, it's a bit difficult, but I love it!! Any one who likes the Silmarillion should try it out!!

Yeah, I've read the Books of Lost Tales - very interesting, especially part two, but it bugs me how it seems less complete than The Silmarillion. It seems more like the rough draft, in a way. I do wish that Christopher Tolkien had left more of the Fall of Gondolin in The Silmarillion - Glorfindel, Ecthelion, Tuor, and Turgon all rock in it. |

I have started re-reading the Silmarillioin recently and i am enjoying it so much! I felt I needed to brush up on my history of the elves as I was trying to write a story about an elf who lived at the time of Galadriel. Writing my own story has really helped me focus this time, I had a hard time keping everything straight the first time round. |

You should read Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle Earth, man that's good - it's just like the Sil, but it starts off near Tuor and Turin's time, and it seems to be less soret of . . . summarised. I dunno, it's good though. Lost tales? haven't heard of that one, i'll have to look into it. |

The Book of Lost Tales are from the History of Middle-earth series, book 1 and 2. The UT are really great and informative. |

 Goodwill! Goodwill is amazingly amazing. (as are all secondhand stores) I found an American first edition of the BOLTV1 there for about $3. Anyway, yeah, definitely get out to secondhand bookstores, or just secondhand stores in general, cause you never know what's there.
