Hey, I was looking around and saw this poll so I just had to come vote :P (I love voting on poles)

I love the Silmarilion (and I'm only 60 pages into it!!)

It's not like reading a story book but it's got it's own feel to it and has a lot of cool information. So yeah... I really like it so far!

Silmarillion is great.
When I read it I wait especially the story of Beren and Lúthien. Though it could have been better but still one of my favourite stories in Silmarillion.

I like the Silmarillion better than the Lord of the Rings.

LotR may be easier to read but I think the story of the Silmarillion is more amazing (not that the LotR story isn't amazing, of course!)

It is a bit hard to understand, but it really helps you understand Middle Earth, and the LOTR books better.

It starts off a bit slow... but it really is incredible, and not boring at all!

The Silmarillion can be hard to read since it describes pretty much EVERYTHING in detail, but i think that's what makes it awesome. I mean, every time i start reading a new book, or start discussing certain parts of the movie/books/middle-earth, I have a complete notion of things, places, people and their backrounds... It's great! You get to know most parts of Eã and so on... It may be a bit hard to read but it's totally worth it!

It would be interesting to do a study on how many people who loved The Silmarillion also have a general love of world history. I honestly suspect that the percentage of history-lovers amongst the fans would be higher than amongst the fanbases of most other fantasy books.

I agree. Even your views on the world change in more rhetorical and philosophic ways after reading the book, at least that's my experience. I often find myself staring into the sky and thinking of the Valas for some reason... Not as a religion obviously, but all aspects of the Silmarillion cross my mind on those moments.
I think the part of the book that marked me the most is how Morgoth, is generally speaking, a metaphor for the deserts, vulcanos, earthquakes and all that brings doom or changes the face of the earth from time to time. Does anyone else agree?

I am not sure that I would go so far as to call him a metaphor for natural disasters....I think Tolkien just wanted to establish him as the cause of those. Before Morgoth overturned the Lamps, there were no such disasters. He had spread his corruption through Arda already, but still--the world was whole. Then, he cast down the Lamps, and the world was literally plunged into chaos.

I do find myself thinking of Elbereth when I stare into a starry sky, though. ^_^

It was good, but at one part it was SUPER boring. I made it through that part, though, and it ended up being really good.
