I was thinking about reading the Sil but i read a bit before, i thought it was boring...but i wanna read all the LOTR books! :bounce:

I LOVE the Silmarillion. There are so many beautiful tales in it. I really enjoy reading it.

The Lays of Beleriand are truly magnificent. I was just like you, I read the first maybe 3 pages and I returned it to the library-it was a little difficult to read, and boring. Well after a while I picked it up again, and as of now read it more times than the LotR.

No way! I understand that the Sil could get a little boring as it is heavy reading but seriously, if you stick with the Silmarilion there is some goreous pieces in there. If you can't make yourself read all of it, choose individual stories e.g. Of the Beginning of Days, Of Beren and Luthien and Of Turin Turambar. And if you want to keep up with the kind of 'Lord of the Rings' side of it, read Of Rings of Power and the Third Age.

But I definitely enjoy reading it once I'm into it :-D

Believe me, the Sil is definitely worth reading. So many questions are answered, and new cultures are explored, and new stories are told. In each chapter you learn something you didn't know before, and in one way or other you can see connections to LotR.

Read, it's definitely not a waste of time. :)

The Sil definetely is NOT boring... it really is worth reading, you get to know so many new persons and stories and places and all that :)

I truly LOVED that book. I was like a bible to me (sorry christians, not meaning to be offensive) But seriosuly. It's an awesome book. The whole time I was reading it, I kept thinking. This one man created a world. The world I'd rather live in. It's truly amazing how much work has gone into that book! It's definately a Must read!!! I read it before I read the books too, and it refers back to it so often, and if I hadn't of read the Sil first, it would have gone in one ear and out the other lol.

I have to say the first time I read this book, I was a little confused, but then I read it again (now, I read it about 8 times) and really this book is great!
It's simply awsome to see how Middle-earth was created and to get to know how Elves woke and everything. Also, I believe that the best battles ever to happen in Middle-earth are in this book. All right, the War of the Ring -here I'm referring to the Battle of Cormallen- was a great battle but nothing compared to the War of Wrath or Dagor Bragollach. And when we compare Middle-earth History from the Age of Creation to the First Age of the Sun to the Third Age, much more has happened back then. We had:
1) Melkor's destrction of Arda (more than once)
2) The creation and destruction of the Lamps and the Trees
3) The awakening of the Races
4) The creation of the Silmarils
5) The rebellion of the Noldor (which I think is one of the most important events of ME history)
6) All the battles, but here I want to mention Nirnaeth Arnoediad, which was the first open treason of Men on the battlefield
7) Earendil's coming to Valinor -which affected Numénor's history by Elros' choice
8 And finally the War of Wrath, which proved to be Morgoth's downfall
I have skipped many events, but I think these show why the Sil is such a great book!

Definately. I don't think you can truly understand Middle Earth until you've read the Sil. You may know alot about it, but it's not the same. Understanding and knowledge are wuite different. -nods-

The first time I tried to read it I did find it rather boring, but I soon learned it was because of the way I approached it. You see, my assumption was that Silmarillion was written as a whole story, rather like LotR. However, it isn't. It's a collection of stories, a collection of histories, which were put together in a single volume and never finished before Tolkien died. Once I looked at it as a collection of stories, I found it much more enjoyable. :)
