I've always been confused by this...

Is 'Vala' the singular form for the erm... Valar, and is 'Valar' actually the plural form?

This may seem like a dumb question, but I've always wondered about it. =/

Oh, and do these "rules" apply for the word 'Maia'?

Vala and Maia are the singular forms, like I am now a Vala... Valar and Maiar are the plural forms, we are Valar... etc :)

^ That be right ^^

It`s like plain ol` Quenya; adding -i or -r for plural.

Ah, thanks Pandora and Elfe! That makes complete sense. I guess this means I should go brush up on my Quenya now... :P

Oh yeah. If I remember correctly, in Quenya you add an 'r' to the end of words that end in a vowel (Vala, Valar) and an 'i' to those that end in a constanant (Teler, Teleri)

Don't forget about Valie though, the female Valar. I'm not sure if it's plural or singular, though,

That's right - I looked it up on the internet. So Vala is singular, and Valar is plural. :-D

According to the Encyclopedia of Arda the word Valier is only used once and it is in Valaquenta to describe the seven queens of the Valar; Varda, Yavanna, Nienna, Estë, Vairë, Vána and Nessa.
Quote:
'Valier' is a plural term.
The singular form, which is apparently 'Valië', is never used in Tolkien's published work.
