The name 'Glorfindel' shows up in both the Sil and FotR. The Glorfindel in the Sil dies but there's some questioning as to whether the Glorfindel in FotR is the same one.
Tolkien never gave a direct answer but he said that it was unlikely that two different people would be given such a distinct name. So do you figure he 'came back' kind of like Gandalf or was he simply named after the Glorfindel in the Sil?

Well...I'd lean toward believing they were two different Elves. I mean, Tolkien reused names a lot, it seems, at least for the human characters. But he does say that the Elves that were killed were reborn in their children, so maybe Glorfindel II was a descendent/relative of Glorfindel I. I dunno...just a thought. People have the same question about the Legolas mentioned somewhere in Book of Lost Tales (or maybe it was UT) and the LotR Legsie.

That is a good question, i always assumed them as one person but Arwen gave a good explanation of why they would be two people... hmm an answer we may never know

What about the names Denethor, Mablung, and Boromir? They were used twice. I think Finduilas *sp?* was too, but I'm not sure.

I actully am pretty sure they're one and the same... I wish they weren't packed away, but I know that somewhere in the History of Middle Earth books Tolkien DOES say that they're the same elf. *longs to look it up*

They're the same person- Glorfindel died fighting a Balrog in the fall of Gondolin. He died, but was one of the few Elves to leave the halls of Mandos and return to Middle-earth. thank god he did!

It wasn't the fact that it was the same name but the fact that it was such a strong and distinct name or however you wanna say it.
I personnaly think that they're the same person but I don't think we'll ever know for sure.

I think they are all two different people, especially if a humans name has been seen twice. Humans die and sometimes they name there children after themselves so you would probably see a name twice for two different people.

Why is there even a poll about this? Everyone knows they are the same person, right?

Goodness Elu, if feawen wanted a poll, then let him/her have a poll. Plus, I disagree with you. I think if a name is mentioned more than once it is either they are still talking about the same character or it is a descendent of that character. Many people/elves named there children after themselves.
BTW, I don't mean to sound harsh...if I do.

I'm not really sure anymore. If they are two different people, I love them both, if they are the same person, I love him! Glorfindel is so cool! I wish they didn't leave him out of the movie.
