Post subject:  Suggestion - The Elvish Section

At the behest of others, I've written some new content for the Elvish section, and some suggestions for the other sections.

The trick, I think, is to make it low-maintenance and well-aging. Sections like the phrasebook, namelists, and word-lists need constant updating, as collections of Tolkien's notes are still being published, and those overturning everything we thought we knew about Elven languages is a common occurrence. I don't have time to keep those updated as well as keep my own website updated (several sections are currently being rewritten right now) so focusing on things that don't change - like the material from the movies and books - is better. Also, there are thousands and thousands of Elvish words in Sindarin and Quenya alone! There are people who have spent years compiling lists of these words. Links to these people's efforts might be better than trying to replicate them.

The way I'm reworking these, it'll be easy for someone else to add to it in the future, someone who has the time to keep it updated. Also, when the Hobbit movies come out and G-i-P publishes another analysis of the translations, I'll be happy to do more pronunciation guides.

I'm going to use the HTML for the diacritics and the IPA symbols to make it easier for the coders.

The new pages shall be uploaded here one by one as I finish them. Feel free to leave feedback and suggestions!

You don't need to post them all here, just keep them on your computer until we can get a coder to update the elvish section :)

Alright!

I know a little HTML, is there any way that I could make this go faster?

We're at a bit of a standstill right now, but I'm planning on pm-ing everyone who's been involved earlier, to see if we can get things going again. I'm sure the coders will appreciate any help they can get.

Yes, the Revival goes in fits and starts, unfortunately. I was thinking about doing a roll call or something this weekend, but I'm glad your getting on it, Ana. :)
Did you ever compile a master-list of who's available to do what? I remember there was talk of that, but I don't remember whether it was ever posted...

Anyway, back on topic, I'm still a little wary of the IPA, as I mentioned in the other topic. Just based on my own personal experience, when I try to decipher IPA I have to look up so many letters that I forget what they stand for and end up very disheartened. I'm sure it's the best way to write pronunciation and easy to learn and all that, but I don't have the time to sit and learn it, and my guess is most people don't. It should probably be there for the people who do happen to know it, but can we find an alternate way of writing the pronunciation as well?
Heck, the best thing would be to provide sound clips! Does anyone (and I'm opening this up to literally anyone and everyone who speaks decent elvish) have the technology and inclination to record some of the phrases?

If we do the sound clip thing, we need someone who can roll Rs.

@taur: not yet, unfortunately. So the pm will be going out to anyone who's ever posted in this section. But maybe when they reply I can make one :)

@arabella: that's great, we need all the people we can get :)

About the sound clips, maube erulisse would be willing? Her elvish pronunciation is really good.

I do a lot of pronunciation coaching through skype. Who ever does this should get a bit of coaching to make certain that they're doing it accurately.

I just had an idea. I can make these into a simple HTML file, upload it to my website, give you guys the link. To get it you just have to use your browser's "get source" function.

Sound good?

There, now it's hooked into my website's CSS file - looks kinda silly, but still illustrates the id-tages I put on the lines.
