^I get that you have doubts, Hravan, but what I don't get is that you don't seem willing to even give the movies a chance. We really don't know very much about what Tauriel's role in the story will be at all, so why are you letting the fact that she's been added ruin these movies for you? They added a female character, so what? Big deal. Until you see the movies, and can actually say that she was given a bigger role than what would be natural, I don't think you should, or even have a reason to, react like this.

When I first found out I thought it wouldn't bother me. But when I started to read more about her and her role, I just got more and more angry. It's just wrong. She's straight off fanfiction.net. She's a Mary Sue because women can't possible like a film unless there's a woman fighter in there. It's obvious that PJ thinks that women don't have the brain power to to like a film unless there's a Mary Sue we can all relate to.
The only thing they've changed about her from all the Mary Sue fanfics is the fact she's not Legolas' girlfriend.
There is no need for her there and it just shows a complete disrespect for Tolkien's work. The changes they made in the LotR trilogy I can understand. But this? There is no need for her character, it's just PJ thinking he needs to ensnare more fans, and this time women who want a Mary Sue, or the people who will think she's eye candy, so he can get more money.

Besides, I didn't really like the first film that much anyway* so I don't really have a great need to go spending over £20 seeing them in the cinema.
I'll wait until they come out on DVD and then I can rent them to see just how bad it is.

*Ok, when I first saw it I loved it but I think part of that was because I was so excited. After I went to see it the second time I started to have major problems with it and when I saw it for the third time I realised that while some parts of it were very good, on the whole the bad things far outweighed the good things and it ruined it for me.

I think PJ thought a female can bring more fans who watch films for the love stories. I loved The Hobbit film (specially the dinner) but I don't see a need for a love story and then when death happens a loss, this is not a hopeless romance film; it's a quest to return the honor of the dwarves city :) .

I haven't read about her, so I don't know what her character is going to be like, but I highly doubt that PJ would include a pure Mary Sue character just because he wants a bigger audience. That's not like him. Also, maybe it would help if you tried thinking of her as an Éowyn rather than a Mary Sue? I know she's not originally in the story, but a female warrior isn't necessarily a bad thing. Besides, just because Tolkien doesn't mention any females, it is rather narrow-minded to think that there weren't any of them around. Also, going in to the movie theater expecting the story to be exactly the same as in the book, is a sure-fire way to ruin the movies for you. Movies and books aren't exactly the same. Their way of telling stories are completely different, and so changing the story is necessary. So far I don't think many of the changes that have been done have been unjustifiable. I'm not trying to attack you, at all, all I'm trying to say is that I think that you would have a much better time waiting for the next movie if you tried to look a bit more positively at things, and didn't expect the worst :)

Still he got Christopher Tolkien angry -Tolkiens rarely be angry- I hate when he adds a new person we don't know about; it might change the heart of the whole story.

I agree, I hope they don't make a love story, that's not what the Hobbit is about!!! That could entirely destroy the films

From what I read about Tauriel I got that she's the captain of the guard in Mirkwood. This character is in fact mentioned in the Hobbit, but there isn't much (or maybe even none, I can't remember) emphasis on the gender of the captain. Making this minor character female is unlikely to ruin the entire movie, and I highly doubt that the Hobbit will turn into a love story by the addition of a female character.

Good! A love story in the Hobbit would be a little extreme in my opinion!
