So, we all know PJ looooooves his creepy creatures, right? And that Weta does a fantastic job realising PJ's vision. What do you think they'll do with Smaug? What do you HOPE they do with Smaug? Given the numerous recent-ish films featuring dragons (Eragon, How to Train Your Dragon [:-P], Reign of Fire [okay, that one's older], BBC Merlin, Voyage of the Dawn Treader), how do you think they'll make Smaug different? Is there any dragon artwork out there, Tolkien or non-Tolkien related, that makes you think "Damn, that's EXACTLY how I picture Smaug"? ^ Something like that? Less evil? More anthropomorphized? Also, does anyone know the status of voice-casting for Smaug? That's got to be a tough one.

^ Did you actually visit the Weta workshop when you were in NZ?
Smaug is going to be awesome. I just feel it in my bones. Weta and PJ will know the expectation will be high and they will deliver.
They must not subconciously manag to get Smaug looking like othr dragons that have come along in recent years. They've got to stick to an original drawing that was done years ago before other CGI/puppet dragons appeared.

Wouldn't it be awesome if Smaug were a puppet dragon? No, sadly Weta doesn't allow people to tour the actual workshop due to dumb confidentiality stuff. Lame. But they DID open what they call the Weta Cave, which has a bunch of touristy things and replicas and miniatures and weapons and an awesome video. The Cave looks like this: Ignore my making faces </hijacking thread>

I read a really long interview with del Toro in the New Yorker, and he revealed a lot of hints about what Smaug might look like. He was definitely looking to break with an average dragon look, and I believe he said that Smaug's shape and silhouette while flying was inspired by a medieval battle-ax. Of course, he's not directing anymore, so PJ might choose to go in a completely different direction, or he might not. They seem to have done a ton of designing already with del Toro so they might not want to start again from scratch. I'm afraid I'm rather uncreative when I picture Smaug myself. I just imagine a standard dragon, so I'm not going to be too picky whatever they do with him.

Smaug's voice should be done by either Bill Nighy or Liam Neeson :O they both have amazing voices.
Since Tolkien calls the dragons 'worms,' will Smaug have a long body? The Smaug dragon in the cartoon version is UGLY.
I want to go to New Zealand SOOO BAD.

Agreed, the cartoon Smaug was ugly, but whoever did the voice for that version... wow. Hope whoever does the new Smaug can top that. Personally, I imagine something like this:

I heard that Christopher Lee might be voicing Smaug. His voice definetly would suit the part

^ That would be absolutely amazing. Just as long as he manages to do different voices for Smaug and Saruman, of course

I really doubt that Christopher Lee would do the voice, his voice is much too distinctive and I don't think he could alter it from Saruman.
There are many, many British actors who have good, commanding voices. I am eagerly awaiting to see which one they pick. If anyone here watches Downtown Abbey, the actor who played Carson the butler (Jim Carter, he was in The Golden Compass and Cranford) he has a magnificent voice.

I think someone who isn't well known will be great, and there are lots of British people who fit the bill. Sean Connery did a good job as Draco, but at the end of the day it was James Bond as a dragon.

I think Leonard Nemoy was up for consideration at one point...

^ I think he'll probably have a British accent. Leonard Nimoy is down on the cast list on IMDB as "rumored" to voice Smaug, but I don't know where that comes from. I've never seen a news story or anything saying they were considering him. Hm, what about Christopher Plummer? His voice isn't deep and booming like Christopher Lee's, but it has gotten a nice gravelly quality since he's gotten older, and The Hobbit is the sort of fantastical thing he's liable to do. I could see them casting him.
