PJ made it official on his official page on FB half an hour ago: Peter Jackson wrote: Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I'm excited to announce today that we'll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that's why he makes such a wonderful elf. I'm honestly quite displeased about it since he's not in the book... but I know most people are probably thrilled. One of the news people should add this bit of info to our homepage.

I know a lot of people are saying how they don't think Orlando should be back, but honestly I think Mirkwood scenes would be weird without him. It'd be like "oh, okay, there are random elves, there's the Elven King himself... where's Legolas, though?" I mean, he's the prince! It's only natural for him to be there. So I'm happy he's coming back, even if I'm not his biggest fan. I think Legolas is important for certain scenes to seem right.

YYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!
*ahem*
I'm pleased about this because I'm a sad Legolas fangirl. I know he's not in the book, but I do feel that he is the returning character (gandalf/saruman/galadriel/elrond/gollum aside) who makes the most sense in appearing. All the same I still don't want him to have a huge role, I'd just like to see him hanging around in Mirkwood and maybe shooting a couple of goblins to death in the battle of the Five Armies:)

It makes complete sense to bring him back on board. Interesting to see the results.

It makes sense for him to be at his home, but I hope they don't try to force him into roles he wouldn't normally be in.

Well, considering what PJ did with LotR, I don't think that he'll try to force him into roles, like you said. Cos PJ's been pretty faithful to the fans and the books and all.

When Bilbo and the dwarfs reached the Mirkwood, I was waiting and waiting for the moment Legolas would appear, but unfortunately, he didn't (A) So I am happy that Legolas will be in the movie even though it's not in the book. I'm curious how they will place him.

there have been things that were not on the books and yet in the movies it didn't look bad, like say...the Elves fighting on Helm's Deep..I'm sure it made a few book fans cringe I'm sure PJ will find a way to make him show up, because of the simple fact he LIVES in Mirkwood, and won't make him screw up with the storyline, I for one am SO happy that he'll be in the movies!

I agree, I can see Legolas hangin around Mirkwood, and it would be one more tie to the movies that have already been made. I was surprised by the news but I'm not really bothered by it, as long as PJ doesnt push him into a big role or anythin, which I dont think he would. Its nice knowin that you will see some familiar faces with the original actors coming back. I cant wait to see it!

As long as Legolas doesn't talk and he doesn't have anything more than five minutes of screentime, I'm happy.

They may also bring him in to the Battle of Five Armies.

I am SURE that they will bring him in a battle. He was so catching in Lord of the Rings' battles that would be a crime!
But I would be happy if he had limited time.

Legolas might help capture the party of dwarves and bring them before his father. Perhaps oversee the jailers locking them up. PJ even might use Legolas and his dealings with the company of dwarves to sort of tell the groundwork of why Gimili's and Legolas' friendship was so extraordinary.

^ Good point, I didn't think about using this story to explain why the Legolas/Gimli friendship was unique. That I can see, and I can also see him participatin in the battle.

I can see how Legolas could fit quite neatly into the story. At the time when he wrote The Hobbit, Tolkien may not actually have thought of the character of Legolas, but there is nothing to say Legolas would not have been in Mirkwood during Bilbo's time there. As long as they don't deviate too far from the book, I won't be too perturbed by the inclusion of Legolas.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about Legolas returning... Even though I'm *gulp* a Legolas/Orlando Bloom fangirl. As long as they don't give him too much of a part, I'm okay with it. Otherwise, I will not be too happy! (Well the Orlando Bloom fangirl in me will be happy, but the book purist in me won't!)
