The Latest actor rumoured to be in the Hobbit is Sherlock Holmes himself- Benedict Cumberbatch- who's Watson is Bilbo Martin Freeman in BBC's Sherlock. Benedict has also played Dr Frankenstein and his monster at the National Theatre and will star in Steven Spielberg's War Horse later this year. Not entirely sure that his involvement in The Hobbit has been confirmed, but after the casting of Stephen Fry, who has collaborated with PJ, maybe casting someone who has worked with two of PJ's collaborators on Tin Tin is not surprising. All the same, this news seems similar to the ones that said David Tennant and Daniel Radcliffe were lined up for Bilbo/Thranduil- as it seems playing an Iconic character opens you up to Hobbit Speculation! There is no news what character he will be, if atall. Which leaves us lots of room for speculation. Do you want to see him in the Hobbit? What character do you think he might be best as, a hobbit to match his eccentric name and curly hair, an elf because of his angular features, or could he even lend his voice to Smaug himself?

I heard this rumor too, and I'd LOVE it if it was true! Benedict is an amazing actor and I love seeing him in things. But most of all I'd love him to be the voice of Smaug - he has such a fantastic voice.

I completely agree! Though he is such a distinctive looking actor I think I'd prefrer him to be a voice actor rather than a 'Face' character. Oh and on the Smaug front- good news! LINK

Well, he's not denying anything! That's good! I really really really hope he's Smaug. It would make my week.

Actually... TORN posted it on their facebook page around the same time you posted it... but they did not post it on their main site until today. Nevertheless, yay! You beat TORN!

So happy to see new.. news on the main site.. great job, JF. But Cumberbatch voicing both? Wouldn't that be ... odd?? Umm as I haven't read the book I can't tell, but wouldn't it matter that it's the same? (unless they use voice manipulation)

I thought the same thing. But they did it pretty well with John Rhys-Davies. I mean, when you know, you can tell it's the same voice, but you don't automatically think of Gimli when you hear Treebeard. So hopefully they'll be able to pull it off in a way so that you don't feel like it's the same character.

Feel free to squee Nurr.
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!! Good job at beating them, JF! I actually did see it first on AU, so kudos to you! Huzzah, I'm so glad he's Smaug! And the Necromancer bonus is just fantastic! I agree with Ana. I think they'll be able to make the voices sound different. I image Smaug to be more gravelly and deep, while the Necromancer would be more airy and soothing...but that could just be me.

I think he's a great choice for Smaug... not sold on Necromancer voice though. I figured that would be someone more 'gruff' perhaps.

From seeing BC act in Sherlock (an excellent series!), I think that he could pull of Smaug and the Necromancer's voices well. As Sherlock, he sometimes has a dangerous tone to his voice in a quiet and creepy way, although I don't know what he'll do in The Hobbit. That said, people can play very different roles quite well (if you've seen Bill Nighy as Davey Jones in Pirates and compared it to his roles in other movies, that might give you an idea of what I'm thinking about).
Who else thinks that it will be weird to see BC and Martin Freeman facing off as Smaug and Bilbo in The Hobbit after seeing them acting out a very different relationship in Sherlock? Or are the relationships very different after all? Opinions?

There are people that are shipping Bilbo/Smaug because they ship Sherlock/John in the BBC series. This... this just makes me cry. Hot, angry, wet tears. I love both the actors, I love both The Hobbit and Sherlock, but it makes me super depressed to see that people can't distinguish between two very different works. Honestly, every time I see "Smauglock" fanart, I feel the need to hit things.

I'm enjoying the joke for now, but I have no fear that it'll interfere with my enjoying the movie. Benedict and Martin are both such fantastic actors, and Benedict won't even be on the screen (except via motion capture), so I know I won't be thinking "Aaaah, all I can see is John and Sherlock in Middle-earth!!" Oh, and also I love Benedict Cumberbatch. More Benedict is always a good thing.
