Not just how Martin Freeman portrayed him, but how he was described in the book, as well as how he was in the LotR trilogy. Do you feel like this Bilbo is easily the same? For me he blew my expectations away. He managed to portray so well how reluctant he is at first and how he has no idea and no real courage to speak of, but then he grows into the group and proves himself. That's why I love him. As well as him sparing Gollum. That moment of pity, where he so easily could have taken him out... It just made Bilbo for me.

I think the actor did a fantastic job bringing Bilbo to life on the screen for this adventure. I love the way the character transforms during the course of the movie's events, as the character changes during the book. I adore the opening of the movie with how perfectly hobbitish and reluctant Bilbo is, his interactions with the others, matched my expectations. But I think the character's growth is what I like the most, that has been good.

Yes, Bilbo absolutely lived up to my high expectations. He was very believable as the hobbit who was used to the comfort of his own house and garden and had absolutely no intention of leaving those comforts to go on a wild trip with a bunch of unruly Dwarves. Yes, when they accuse him of not being a good burglar/fighter, he still wants to show them what he's worth. I also got the idea that he was a bit thrown off by the unending faith that Gandalf seems to have in him and his burgling abilities, which he doesn't believe in himself.

But despite these doubts, he was still prepared to go to the trolls and to defend Thorin, so I think he slowly started to believe in his own abilities and skills. That slow development makes him into a believable hero, that's also very easy to like and sympathise with :)

^ Maybe you could both explain what made him so epic/brilliant? It's always nice to hear other people's thoughts :)

I definitely think Martin was a perfect Bilbo. I loved him in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and knew he was a good actor (I've seen him in other things to, Love Actually comes to mind) but wasn't entirely sure how he'd portray the character. He did really well in my opinion, really showing that Bilbo was never a coward, he was just very comfortable with the life he had. Or so he thought. To me it was everything from the tone of voice to his facial expressions. The scene that really made it for me was when he showed mercy on Gollum instead of killing him when he had the chance. That look of utter pity on his face was so brilliant.

he was PERFECT.He not only kinda looks like a young Bilbo compared to the old one (Ian Holm), but he got his expressions, mannerisms, voice, and attitude spot on, loved him!

I completely agree about his mannerisms and facial expressions, he did a fantastic job when he didnt even have a line to say. When he met Gandalf, the awkwardness and nervousness was brilliant, and hilarious. When he met Gollum, and showed him mercy, I too loved that part. Everything he did I think really brought the character from the pages of the book to the screen, and I found him to be a believable young version of the Bilbo we all met in LotR....Now I want to go watch The Hobbit...

I think it's amazing how they managed to find both an older and a younger actor who could portray Bilbo so well. I love both of them and don't think either did better than the other; they did their age just perfectly. But what are the odds? xD

I loved Martin as Bilbo! I've not read The Hobbit in years, but I was still totally blown away by the portrayal. His face was so expressive and the acting was just perfect. I mean, everyone was fantastic but Bilbo was just wow. I can't wait for the other films.

At first, I was sceptical about him. Especially, since in LotR at the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf said that "You haven't aged a day" to Bilbo. I thought it was weird, that they were casting a new actor to play Bilbo during The Hobbit films.

Then I saw it. It was like Bilbo had jumped right out of the pages of the book, and appeared on the screen. He was exactly how I'd always pictured him to be. I had pretty high expectations, because The Hobbit was the only book that I could actually read all the way through, and re-read when I started to forget what happened in it. Martin Freeman was absolutely perfect as Bilbo in every way. Especially how he subtly shows all along that Bilbo is starting to change, and fit in with the dwarves more.

Martin Freeman blew my socks off.
I wish I could put it into words... his facial expressions, mannerisms, and development from quaint shire-hobbit to "burglar" were excellent. Even though we don't get to be "in his head" as much as in the books, he makes it easy to tell exactly what is going through Bilbo's head without the necessity of words.

Love it. Loved him. Can't wait for more. :D

I noticed, also in the prologue of FOTR you got Ian's Bilbo, obviously, finding The Ring, and such scene wasn't played EXACTLY on The Hobbit, which is an inconsistency I can forgive lol since it was still wonderful.
