Where does Bilbo go after the trip to Rivendell. When he states 'I need to find somewhere quiet where i can finish my book...' was he reffering to Rivendell or what? I mean like, does Bilbo intend on travelling to Rivendell when he leaves the Shire or does he simply follow his heart. Also, does Bilbo stay there up until the ring is destroyed and if so where does he stay? |

I don't know if Bilbo intended to go directly to Rivendell when he left the Shire. All I know is that he stayed there pretty much the entire time Frodo had the ring. By the time the ring was destroyed, Bilbo was basically starting to disinigrate. After his reunion with Frodo you could tell he was going a little nutty -- or at least, he was very fatigued and had some memory loss... Anyone else have something to add? |

I think he went directly to Rivendell when he left the Shire.. because he wanted to go see the Elves; he liked them so much! So yeah and I think he remained there for the entire time Frodo had the ring.. like Aldawen said. And once the ring was out of his posession, he began to age very quickly, but he became normal once again.. though he still had a Gollum-like creature instilled in him. |

Oh... I thought that he was wanting to set out on another adventure. I know he loved elves but Rivenddell wasn't exactly a route to adventure, if anything it was a pathway to protection. Why was it he chose Rivendell exactly? Anyone know? ![]() |

Well like Haldir o Lorien said he wanted to see the elves alot. And maybe he thought going all the way to Rivendell would be an adventure? Also he knew that he was going to get old, so he probably went there to live the rest of his days until the Grey Havens. And its the house of healing and all. |

yes i agree. BUt i think on the way to Rivendell he visited some sights from his trip to the Lonely Mountain with the dwarves, like the trolls and stuff. |

Yeah, like when Frodo wakes up in Rivendell and he sees Bilbo. Doesn't Bilbo say something along the lines of 'I meant to go back, you know. See the Lonely Mountain, visit Lake-town, wonder at ---- Mirkwood-power-memory-failing-me...' |

I mean like, does Bilbo intend on travelling to Rivendell when he leaves the Shire or does he simply follow his heart. Also, does Bilbo stay there up until the ring is destroyed and if so where does he stay? I'm pretty sure he intended to go to The Lonely Mountain, because when Gandalf was snooping around he found that map thing of The Lonely Mountain. Then when Frodo meets him in Rivendell, Bilbo says something about wanting to make it to the Lonely Mountain but "old age finally caught up with him" so he decided to stay in Rivendell since he couldn't continue his journey. |

So he was unable to carry on because he was too old and fragile? That's a shame! Does that mean he could not adventure as he hoped to? |

That's what I got out of it. It makes sence, so it's not like it's completely wrong. It sounds like he didn't make it to the Lonely Mountain, so he just stayed in Rivendell. |

Though he probably would have liked to go all the way to the mountain. ![]() |
