Pivoting on my thoughts from the thread about the 9 companions, I'd just like to say this:

I think that the breaking of the fellowship may have been predicted but to an extend, inteded. Each character was significant to the unfolding of the story, and having the fellowship break, not only did it demonstrate each characters determination and love for one another, but it also meant that each character could play their part in the destruction of the ring. In a way they all saved Middle Earth. Don't you agree?

It just shows the unity of the characters and that in itself - is Magic.

I've said it before, and I'll always believe it: every character in LOTR is a hero/ine, to some degree. :)

^ Well, Gandalf said everyone has a part to play, no? And I agree with him.

I have to say though, for me it was Frodo's adventure.

Besides the fact that the Fellowship was there to parallel the story of the 9 mortal kings of old who eventually became the Ringwraiths, I definitely think they all saved Middle-Earth in one way or another. The different events that broke up the Fellowship and ultimately brought them together again are like a domino effect. One thing leads on to another...

They all did for sure. Frodo, Sam, Gandalf and Aragorn are most easily seen, but they all helped out.
Having the Fellowship break made it easily seen that all the characters had a part to play in the destruction of the ring. In the Fellowship, Merry and Pippin didn't really seem to be helping all that much, but after the breaking you can see them help out more.

So yes, they all helped destroy the ring.

:blink: Sorry, but that's confusing, to me at least. Who are you implying that it was intended by? Eru, or Gandalf/Elrond? :confused2:

I agree. Everyone played an important part in destroying the ring, even those that died. Just look at Boromir - he was a huge part of the story, even with Denethor. :yes:

They're all heros! The quest would have failed had even one of them denied the challenge. I've heard people say things like, "Oh, they didn't need Boromir," "Why did they take Pippin?" "What good is Legolas?" and it gets me so mad! They all played a huge part in the freedom from Sauron.

^Exactly. Everyone played a part, even the deceased characters like Boromir. They furthered the quest and people don't realize that.

Hm....if that's true then that makes me question something
But I'm 11% sure that they litting up did all take in part of saving Middle-Earth. Yes I do think so because if they would have stood together things may have ran differently.....one thing that I think is that if they would have stood together, Frodo would have had an easier time and would have actually gone faster to Mt. Doom,I mean he would have real fighters with him to protect him, he wouldn't have had to sneak so much and he would have avoided Gollum's thrat and perhaps would have an easier time getting past Shelob. Aragorn and the others would have made sure, but then if they did go with Frodo, the lands of the Free People would have been lost. So I think that it's like a double-blade sword. o.O;;

Yeah, I guess you're right there about the double blade sword. But Tolkein portrayed them as people. Pretty much all of them had some sort of weakness or other, so I think it might have been difficult for them to stick together the whole way. It's a bit hard to explain.

Although the fellowship "broke", in a sense it didn't break. They all worked toward the destruction of the Ring, just from different angles, all of which were important. And yes, even Boromir played his role in the saving of the fellowship. My mind just wandering here....say that all of the fellowship did go with Frodo, it would have drawn attention to his movements, thus impeading his progress to Mount Doom as well as leaving the rest of Middle-Earth open for conquest. And, that still would not have assured Frodo's ascent to Mount Doom and victory. No, each one played the important role when and where they were supposed to be for the success of the entire fellowship. Thus, they all saved Middle-Earth, each one playing a different role, sometimes together, sometimes apart. All working toward a common goal out of love and loyalty! Makes the heart glow, doesn't it? :-D

I agree. When Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli went to Rohan, they saved it from destruction, Boromir and Faramir protected Osgiliath to keep Sauron's forces from possessing it and Sam and Frodo kept the Ring from Sauron.
