Post subject:  Creatures drawn to the Ring

I remember reading that PJ said, he wanted creatures like the Cave Troll and the Watcher to be able to sense the evil of the Ring, and to be almost attracted to it, which is why Frodo is often under attack from various things, and I can see the sense in that statement.... but after a while of Frodo being singled out, I think it sort of made Frodo look a bit weak, that it was always him that got into danger.

I think if one of the other Hobbits or maybe even Boromir were the ones under attack fro the troll and the Watcher, it would have made it a bit more... real? Rather than it being Frodo time after time.

I can see what you are referring it, but, if you look into it, it wasn't that it was Frodo time after time, but it was the ring time after time. It just so happened that Frodo was carrying it.

I think the whole Fellowship entered in with an understanding (even somewhat minimal) of the fact that their task was to destroy the ring. Therefore, some connected (maybe not Pippin though), that they would have to protect Frodo.

I think Frodo being attacked all of the time is how it would have been. It Rotk (the book more likely), if Sam had the ring for longer than he did, we would really see the same thing for him.

I hope I am not rambling too much.

I can see what you mean smeag, but if you take it at face value (with the exception of the Wraiths at Weathertop because they are like Ring-sniffer-Wraiths) it got a little bit.. repetitive? That Frodo wasn't just in danger in battle, but he was actively the one being attacked by creatures who could have chosen anyone, but always chose him. I can understand the reason behind it, as I said, but when you're watching the film it's like "oh, not again".

Frodo is a protagonist... audience not familiar with the whole coloured palette of characters want to see Frodo, and they would probably care less for the rest of the Fellowship. I agree with you that Frodo tend to be the object of attack an almost obnoxious number of times, but that's probably what carries the drama in an action movie. Ring = mucho important, Frodo = bearer of object of mucho importance, if Frodo is injured/dies = very bad outcome for good guys, or alternatively a very short movie! :P

I see from both sides. It is repetitive, as JF said, but that's part of the story.

I guess that's a good thing because it lets the reader know how dangerous the ring really is to its owner and that it really "wants to be found."

I didn't know PJ had intended for it to be that way. I sort of understand what you mean though. Frodo really is a bit of a target most of the time. I don't think I would've changed it though considering it does a good job showing the dangers that carrying The Ring can put on oneself.

Classic movie-ness. The protaganist is always targeted more than other characters.

Really, I never thought about this. I thought only the Nazgul could sense the Ring...in other situations, poor Frodo seemed to just be conveniantly in the way.
