Yeah, because there's a big swarm of something black flying towards them. He instantly saw what it was and they took cover. So, of course that means he can see far. :)

I've read on many elven websites that Elves are meant to have good eyesight anyway :)

I think he just senced them, I don't think he would have hidden such a thing from the Fellowship. My Legie would have never done that. Besides, weren't there trees on the way?

Aragorn knew he had keen eyesight. In TTT he DID ask Legolas what he could see with his elven eyes and so on

Can Legolas actaully see that far?

Elves have keen senses, so the answer is pretty much yes

Well, really, the question is, how far away are the Uruks? Legolas can't see through trees, or hills, or other solid things. If the Uruks were nearby, with only trees between them and the Fellowship, I think maybe Legolas could have seen them, but - IMHO, he only sensed them. "A shadow and a threat has been growing in my mind - something draws near."

I think it was just the 'presence of evil' so to speak.

Hmm..nobody has mentioned his hearing...I think Uruks are probably not the most...err...quiet of creatures, so I imagine when they run through the forest they probably make a lot of noise...:p
