Post subject:  Forum organisation revisited

So in order to get things moving regarding the re-arrangement/organisation.. changing.. whatever you might want to call it, I figured we should re-start the discussion on it here. I understand if things look a bit chaotic, especially if you are new to this topic, but just ask if there is something that is unclear (which there most likely will be!) :teehee:

Major decision points:
What will happen to the Actor-board (LotR and non-LotR)?
Should the World Wide Web section take up so much room now seeing as there is so little activity.
Where is the Misc. Book discussion and Misc. Movie discussion? Did we decide on moving them?? To where?

My opinion is that we should shape A-U to the current activity level, so if an entire sub-board is almost deserted it shouldn't necessarily take up so much room as in the past. The Hobbit is still so far away and as I see it we are sending a wrong signal if we're having sections with no activity for the past month or more... We can always add/expand later on if we need to. :)

Thanks for making this thread, Eä, it's definitely needed :)

I think I've said so before, but I feel like Clubs fit better in under "Fan section" than under "Life outside LotR". I realize that might be because I generally post in fan-based clubs though, so other might have a different opinion on that.

As for the "Favorite Sites" sub-forums, how about dropping the "favorite" and just call them Tolkien and Non-Tolkien Sites?

^Agreed. :)

I just had an idea of where to put the Actors boards:

Life Outside LotR
The Green Dragon (Your Life)
Mirrormere (Movies & TV)
ACTORS (LotR/Hobbit and others), maybe as a hidden dropdown subforum under movies
Michel Delving (Literature)
The Golden Hall (Music)
House of Bombadil (Miscellaneous Randomness)

Fan Section
Bucklebury (Fan Art)
The Hall of Fire (Fanfiction & Poetry)
Numenor (Requests)
Dale (Resources & Tutorials)
The Glittering Caves (Clubs)

I'm not sure... I don't think it fits under Life outside LotR, because it's weird to have discussions about something LotR-related there, but if LotR and non-LotR actors are combined, it doesn't really fit anywhere else either. Possibly under Fan Section, as it is definitely fan-related.

Post subject:  Re: Forum organisation revisited

This is an almost impossible discussion because basically it comes down to personal opinion and one opinion may be as valid as the other. That was the handy thing of having Arweb just making decisions. :P
But I think we need to set a deadline for a decision to be made... soon.. so perhaps June 1st?

I see two options:
1) Have a team of 3-4 people decide the details among themselves.
2) Put up one or two or three (max) suggestions for a public voting.

Sounds like an excellent plan. Though I think the suggestions made here should definitely be taken into full consideration. What's our time frame on this? Maybe we should have people discuss and give suggestions until perhaps Monday of next week, and then have the committee debate and discuss until the 1st when the will post the options. We could vote on that for a week, and then end the polls and send the plan to Arwen.

Perhaps rename the 'Announcements' category to Important Matters or Forum Matters?

I agree that Gaming should be in the Life Outside LotR category and not be just for LotR gaming for ANY kind of gaming!

My suggestion:

Forum Matters
The Halls of Mandos (Announcements)
Dwimorberg (Suggestions and Help)
The Tower of Ecthelion (Member Awards)
Parth Galen (Polling)

Introductions
The Prancing Pony (Introduce Yourself)

Book Discussion
Gollum's Cave - The Hobbit
Bag End (The Fellowship of the Ring)
Helm’s Deep (The Two Towers)
Minas Tirith (The Return of the King)
Doriath (Other LotR-Related Book Discussion)

Movie Discussion
The Lonely Mountain (The Hobbit)
Bagshot Row (The Fellowship of the Ring)
Ithillien (The Two Towers)
Mount Doom (The Return of the King)

Imladris (Languages)
Dol Guldur (LotR & Hobbit Actor Discussion)
The Misty Mountains (Completely Miscellaneous LotR)

I think Eru's suggestion is the best I've seen yet. Except with the Contest section thrown back in. :P (Maybe in the Fan Section under "Clubs"?)

Also, I don't see the point in keeping the Member Awards section around unless we're planning to have Member Awards again sometime in the near future. (Are we? :lost:)

And another possible name for the "Announcements" category: Administration? Just a thought. :)

I'm sorry I sound so curt, but I'm in a bit of a rush! :bye:

I agree with Taur, except I thought Forum Matters was quite a good title, so I like that better than Administration.

Looks fine to me too.

I do still think there should be a "your site" section, but if it's going to help de-clutter the forum then we can do without it for now. BUT if we find a million people join AU with their own site and it would be less messy to bring "your site" back... we can do that right? :-)

So I vote that whoever can do the job, just go ahead and do it. I guess forums that are going, the threads will need moving elsewhere? Because I know eventually there is meant to be some tidying up to do, but now isn't probably that time.

I like Eru's suggestion too. :)

Just one question where would Non-LotR and non-Hobbit actors discussions go?

Concerning time frame, as far as I remember Arwebs is away for another week so if we leave it up over the weekend or something people will have time to give their yay or nay, and then Arwen can make the changes when she's back. Yes? Sounds good? :P

Looks good. I only have one question. How will people find the hidden sub-forums? I mean, it's easy for us, because we know they're there, but what about all the people who don't read this thread and know we put it there? This might just be me being dense, but hidden sub-forums just doesn't seem like a very good idea...

Author:  ErulissëEnethNîn [ May 20th, 2011, 10:28 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Forum organisation revisited

Well it won't be hidden-hidden, you just have to go to the Movies & TV forum to see it.

The people that are already members of the forum will know through some sort of announcement. The people who join for the first time won't know it had once been its own separate sub-forum on the forum index anyway.

That LotR/Hobbit actors get their own sub-forum on the forum index makes sense since people will come to a LotR/Hobbit forum to fangirl about them. But other non-LotR actors aren't that big of a topic to warrant it's own sub-forum on the forum index. Since we no longer have an all-actor section, it doesn't make sense to put it anywhere else on its own and because actors are associated with films and TV, that is the only logical place to put them.

The way I see it, it's either that or have the Actors section back.

Well, will there be any sort of indication it's there? That's the only thing that concerns me, really.

Post subject:  Re: Forum organisation revisited

Ah, I didn't know Arwen was away. I guess it can wait a bit longer then. :P

I think hidden sub-forums are a great idea.

^ It would be possible Ana if we wanted to make it known about the sub-forum. Check out how this site does theirs.

http://www.fanmail.biz/mboard/

So for our Mirrormere forum you could have underneath all the info of what that section is about - SUB FORUM: Don Guldur

Would this be a good compromise?
