I read the Hobbit after LotR, so I already had the story for the Ring. What I like is that Tolkien did not intend to write the Ring as something evil during the Hobbit, and that it fits perfectly with the timeline we follow in LotR. Ofcourse the Ring was never completely without danger, and there was always something weird and evil about it, but during the events in the Hobbit the Ring isn't that much of a thread as during the events in LotR. Ofcourse Gandalf already has his suspicions about Bilbo's newly found Ring, but he is not really alarmed untill we reach the events in LotR, which is 60 years later.

I watched the movies and became a fan before reading the Hobbit and after that I read LotR, I read them both this April after many attempts. I think that my reaction to the Ring (if I hadn't watched the movies first) would be that it was just a magic ring, nothing much after that.

I had not seen or read LOTR before the Hobbit movie, but I read the Hobbit book, so it was a little different for me. I knew it was important but I didn't know why lol. So after watching and reading LOTR, it explained a lot!!!11

I read it, in a weird order. I had seen FotR, but had mostly forgotten it, by the time I got a copy of The Hobbit. I didn't read it for a long time. My mum got me a copy of TTT extended edition for Christmas that year, so I watched that. Then I read The Hobbit. Then saw RotK.
I had suspicions that the ring was evil, when I read TH, but it hadn't sunk completely in at the time. Because I wasn't massively into LotR at the time. Even if I hadn't have seen the films, I would have suspected something wasn't right, especially the way gollum is, and how Bilbo has to escape.
