Did the breaching of the wall remind anyone slightly of the Atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Obviously not as destructive, since the Medieval folk did not know of nuclear weapons... but that was a bit similar. Or am I just trying to find connections? I'm always in two minds when someone brings up how TLotR is connected to the World Wars. I always remember how Tolkien says TLotR is not an allegory and he hates allegory, but I can't help connecting different parts of the book with WWI or II. It didn't actually remind me of the atomic bombs. The TLotR explosion was tiny compared to the impact of the ones in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Yeah but in their time, that explosion would have been considered a huge one, would it not?
It would, but it didn't wipe out tens of thousands of civilians upon detonation and thousands more afterwards due to radiation...

I don't think I would compare the explosion at Helms Deep to WWII, rather to the attacks on 11 September in the US. Even the LotR cast mentions that that is what they are reminded of when they watch that scene.

This Orc...Grrr !
I really wanted to punch the screen at this point when Aragorn yells in desperation 'Bring him Down!' In elvish to Legolas.
Sent shivers down my spine - sheer evil of it. Arg !

Actually peeps... he isn't an Orc... he's an Uruk-Hai Berserker... they wear no armour as they are not bred to survive but to literally scare the heck out of their enemies, and to basically kill as many as they can before they themselves are killed. Which is why they wear no armour and also why a Berserker was chosen for the "suicide mission". They're also a lot taller than normal Uruk's, hence they can wield larger weapons.
As for resembling the Olympics... yes it does, but not so much that each time I watch it, I immediately think of things like 400m hurdles or something.
As for that scene resembling world events like WWII and September 11th... eh, not really. It's just a wall that get's blown up and allows hordes of Uruk-hai into a stronghold. This might just be me, but I don't think there's any resemblance really. Perhaps if the TTT had come out this year, people wouldn't have thought so much about similarities between that scene an September 11th.

YES! It does remind me of the Olympics! I guess PJ wanted it to be all dramatical, because, as you said Aerandir, in the books it wasn't a big deal.

The olympic torch run from hell. I agree. And it wasn't even an ordinary fire! It was some giant orc sparkler.

And the Uruk did go down. Hey, two arrows in him and he only JUST made it to the ordnance. He was going down by the time the second arrow hit him. Lego should have hit him again for good measure.

LoL they should have made it even more slow motion and added "Chariots of Fire" on top of it! That would have been perfect and over-hilarious!
It was a total Chariots of Fire moment. My brother and I always hum it whenever that scene comes on in the film.

If someone hasn't made that and put it up on You Tube, I'll be sorely disapointed.

We can only assume (probably correctly) that it was some form of gunpowder, but perhaps not. There are only so many substances known that can "blast". Unless you want to go all PotC and defy the laws of combustion. What? I didn't say anything! Nothing about how if you burn that much rum you get a burnt sticky mess, not an explosion. Right! Not a thing!

Yes! If they ever have a LotR-themed Olympics (which would be the greatest thing ever), that's how they should run the torch into the stadium.

Aerandir wrote: Well, in the book, there's just an explosion and someone (Gamling?) shouts something along the lines of 'they have brought blasting powder from Orthanc!' or some such thing. It's not that big of a deal, in the book. From the book Two Towers chapter 'Helms Deep':
Quote: Even as they (Aragorn, Eomer, and Gamling) spoke there came a blare of trumpets. Then there was a crash and a flash of flame and smoke. The waters of the Deeping stream poured out hissing and foaming; they were choked no longer, a gaping hole was blasted in the wall. A host of dark shapes poured in. ”Devilry of Saruman!” cried Aragorn. ”They have crept into the culvert again while we talked., and they have lit the fire of Orthanc beneath our feet. [i]”Elendil! Elendil!” he shouted as he leapt into the breach.
Basically, the book has it the enemy planted the 'bomb' in stealth, whereas in the movie, PJ made a public spectacle of it. The book doesn'telaborate exactly [i]how it was set off. That is open to interpretation.

If I remember correctly, JRRT was quite adamant that LoTR was not based on WWII (specifically with people seeing LoTR as an allegory of WWII, which got him seriously "not amused"). The trench warfare of WWI, which he had experienced first-hand, and of course medieval castle-storming, would be much closer - or for that matter the way the Turkish sappers tried to breach the walls of Vienna in the failed 1683 siege.
