This was the saddest scene in the movie for me joint with the dropping of the ring and the end of course lol. I loved all of the movie but this was such a sad scene. In a pervious post there are complaints made about this scene and apparently it has provoked a lot of anger seeing as it isn't true in the book, I however, have to say that i believe that what Peter Jackson did with this scene was heart wretching, and it really brought about the corruption of the ring. It is a very emotional scene and provokes a lot of sympathy for poor samwise, as if it wasn't for him, Frodo would have been a goner long ago...the fact Shelob gets him proves just that!

Yes, this scene was really depressing! There was nothing that could prepare you because this didn't happen in the books, that makes it even more depressing and sad! :( This is one scene I would really like to run away from the TV just so that I don't have to see it.

I always bawl my eyes out for this scene. Especially when I see Sam crying. This is the scene that really makes me hate Gollum more than anything. i don't care if he was possessed by the Ring. No excuses. He made Sam cry like that. And he made Frodo into something he's not. I can't help but think that Frodo wouldn't ever do that. That wasn't Frodo talking. It was the Ring. Very sad nonetheless.

And mine. I was so sad.
I don't know if I'd say it's the saddest scene in the movie, but it was terrible. A lot of people complain about this scene because it wasn't in the book. I myself, was sort of angry about it. Why would PJ add something that bad? Now I understand that it was for dramatic purposes. They had to show how much the Ring was taking over Frodo. I still think there are other ways they could have done this, but I know now wny this scene exists.
I have to give a lot of credit to Elijah Wood and Sean Astin for this scene. There is so much emotion there. It would be a really hard, and emotionally exhausting scene to do probably, but they did it beautifully. They are such amazing actors. LOTR was extrememly well cast. If perfection were possible, LOTR might be it.

I know that's how it is.
Without this scene we could never have gained such a full understanding of the power of the ring. Frodo Baggins would never have been capable of such a thing but it was all the ring and the power of evil triumphing over good temporarily.

The power of evil triumphing over good temporarily. I like the way you put that. It's very clear and to the point. It makes a lot of sense.
That's exactly what it was. I think this scene made a lot of people have mistaken ideas about Frodo. they disliked him because of what he did to Sam. But they have to understand that that wasn't Frodo. That was the Ring!
Sorry. I have problems. I get overly passionate about LOTR and Frodo in particular.

Grr.....I didn't like this scene. It's not in the book, and while for some movie-goers it might be necessary to explain just how possessing the Ring was, but I just found it annoying. Frodo NEVER turned to Gollum over Sam, and I didn't like PJ's changing of it. I actually didn't even get choked up by this scene, since I was so annoyed by it.

I was more shocked then anything, but I was also very very sad. I couldn't believe it. Sam leave Frodo? Frodo turn on Sam? Never! It's impossible. And yet, there it was.
I do think that they showed the power of the Ring enough that they could have omitted this scene. It would have saved me the fear that my heart was going to rupture.
For the record, is there anyone who actually liked this scene? Or anyone who wasn't sad, annoyed, or angry over it? Because I've never seen someone like this. But who knows?

Alas, what you have to understand here is the fact that it wasn't Frodo Choosing Gollum over Sam, It was the ring choosing Gollum over Sam. You are aware that the ring has a will of it's own. It chooses it's own path and PJ put this is to demonstrate the force of the ring and how corruption beomes so much deeper as they move closer to Mordor.

What Frodo's Guide says is correct. Frodo, the real Frodo, would never have said anything like that to someone, especially to one he loved as he did Sam. By this time however, there was more of the Ring in Frodo than there was of himself. It had control over him.
PJ and Lij compare it to the worst addiction you could ever face. They compare Frodo at this pint as a junkie, someone who is so far consumed by their addiction that they can never turn back. The Ring, the drug, is in control here.
Frodo. My anti-drug. LOL.

I don't think that it was the Ring at all. Well, not that way. I think it was really just to show how...BAD...Gollum is. It just makes you hate him! It's showing you that Smeagol isn't just there for funny schizophrenic scenes. He can actually DO something.

Well, I guess the Ring did do something, because the only reason Gollum/Smeagol did it was to get the Ring.

I think I know why they did it. I just don't like it.

Post subject:  I have to disagree...

Sorry i feel obliged to disagree. Without this scene, people who hadn't read the books would never gain a full understanding of the power of the ring. Yes...in all fairness it was very shocking and it does make you loathe Gollum but there's not only that aspect to it. Think about this logically. Peter Jackson put this in so that we could see how evil can easily corrupt hearts of a pure nature and i think this scene demonstrated it tremendously. It also added a great depth into the effects of the ring and the influence of the Gollum because of the power he sought so much. I think that this scene is very well done and it's exsistence means we can get an even more accurate view of the ring's power.
