I was thinking about this the other day; What if Arwen brought the Narsil instead of Elrond. How do you think Aragorn would react? Do you think he would still take it?

That's an interesting thought. I think he would've reacted differently if it had been Arwen. Because I think when Elrond mentioned that Arwen was dying, it was really Aragorn's motivation to claim his rightful title to help save his true love. I think if it had been Arwen, Aragorn would've been holding too much onto the past rather than looking to the future.
*sighs* Alright, I'm done.

I too, believe his reaction would've been very different if it had been Arwen. I think eventually she would be able to get through to him, but I think they did the right thing in using Elrond. I think just hearing from Elrond that Arwen was dying was a huge kick in the butt for him. Huge motivation actually, because he would be fighting for his love and doing what he had to do.

I agree with both of you. I think Aragorn would not have been ready to go had it not been for the sake of Arwen.

After reading, I agree that it was better for Elrond to give him the sword...he really needed the inspiration!

I agree. But I think Arwen was too week to come and Elrond wouldn't let her. And yes, even the tought that Arwen could die gave Aragorn inspiration to to claim his title and destiny

Yeah, I agree with you. If Elrond hadn't gone, I don't think he actually would have done all that stuff.
*yawn* I'm bored.

I agree that he needed the motivation.. and a little push. I doubt he'd have been as exalted to help save Middle-earth if he could actually see that Arwen was fine. And since Elrond told him that Arwen was dying, he knew that the only way she could be helped is if he went back to her, bringing a peaceful, battle-free environment with him. If Arwen was the one to bring Andúril to Aragorn, it would mean that she was perfectly healthy enough to risk such a long journey to him.. which wouldn't really be a good booster for him to continue.. so, strangely enough, Arwen being on the verge of death actually helped Aragorn... weird.
Yes I know I make loads of sense.

Also, and I agree with everyone on their thoughts, that the fate of the Ring decided the fate of Arwen. if the Ring was destroyed, she'd live. If it wasn't, she'd die, whether or not Aragorn claimed the throne of Gondor or not.

I'm glad I posted this topic! It was creative of PJ and the writers to think of it.

I think he would still have taken it. I don't know why but I think he would because of the duty to his kingdom. If that makes any since I am luck

I know what you're trying to say.
But your right SwedishMoose, it was really off from the books. Of course in the books Aragorn got the sword in the first book. But since Peter Jackson took the movies in a different direction, I think he did a good job compensating for it. If you think about it, having Elrond bring it to him in the thrid movie made it more dramatic for when Aragorn whent to conjour the dead army. So, it works!

I thought it was brilliant of PJ to think of Arwen dying and Erond coming and delivering the sword to Aragorn.

Really? I thought it was dumb. Completely uncanonical. Arwen's fate tied to that of the Ring? Grrr...completely ridiculous, and irritating.
However, I'm glad that they left it to Elrond to bring Anduril to Aragorn, instead of Arwen. That would've been more uncanonical, IMHO.

If Arwen had brought him the sword, I'm sure he would have reacted so differently, because he wouldn't have got the motivation that Arwen was dying, which is what he definitely needed.
