I don't think he deserved it, because it was Gullum who corrupted Smeagol and throwing them both into the lava was just not fair for Smeagol, at one time in the movie, Smeagol was actually good. But I guess that when both Gullum and Smeagol were tricked by Frodo in Ithilien, I guess that Smeagol did not trust Frodo anymore. But if only there was a way to split Gullum and Smeagol from each other, there was a chance that the good old Smeagol would come back.
I think that every person has a good side and a bad side and in Gullum/Smeagol's case the dark side was poisoning the good side, is like when a child is corrupted by an adult making the child think like the adult; and there for the child would follow the adult's ways, for good or for bad.
But in the other hand, no one desrves to die,

It's kinda complicated  but I hope that u could understand my point my Elf friends! :)

No I don't think he deserved to die. He was corrupted by the ring; it's not his fault. Saying that Gollum deserved to day is like saying that Boromir deserved to die. And I don't think that Boromir deserved to die at all.

So why does Arwen deserve to die, Beriadanwen? Your hypocrisy astounds me.

Oh my gosh I don't think that Arwen deserves to die! I laughed at what Elu Thingol said because it was funny how he said it. I would have laughed if he had said it about anyone!

I really hoped that Smeagol would be freed of Gollum and redeemed at the end of the story - I was gutted when he fell into the lava.

When he first shakes off Gollum in the film I was thinking - 'Nice one Smeagol' so I hoped that he would do it again - I should be so lucky!

Mind you - the look of ecstacy on his face when he gets the ring at the end made me think - at least he died happy. ;)

i think that Smeagol deserved life. as said before, he's just a being corrupted by the Ring. but when it comes to Gollum...yes. he was evil.

there was no redeeming Smeagol even if he was freed of the ring. he could never return to his hobbit-form. even if he did some good deeds, the world would still look on him in pity and prejudice. for him, death would have released him from all that.

I personally thought Gollum/Smeagol deserved to die. Yes, yes. I know you all are glaring daggers and all but you say that Smeagol was once good and he didn't deserve to die but Gollum did. Regardless of what you all say, Gollum and Smeagol are one and the same. ....He...may have a severe case of bipolarism but...anyway - but I don't think by only getting rid of the Ring and not killing Gollum would've changed anything. He would still be fighting with himself, still be wanting the ring and he may go into denial that the Ring no longer exists. He would keep crawling around Middle Earth disturbingly talking to himself about something precious that no longer is precious.

If everyone that was corrupted by the ring and the power that it resembles, could go back to their innocent state of mind, there wouldn't BE a conflict in the first place.

the Afterlife would have been kinder on Smeagol than the life he was living then

You are absolutely right of course - I suppose that I'm just a sentimental old so and so who is a sucker for the underdog. :sly:
