Has anyone else read it?

Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.

Ah! It was wonderful. Youth Vs. Old Age, Purity Vs. Sin, Good Vs. Evil! Such a thought-provoking and captivating book.

It is one of those stories that lingers... so stirring.

I had wanted to pick it up for some time, but only just did last week. Finished it already. It was hard to put down.

I highly recommend you read it and that some wonderful Hollywood director (maybe Burton) makes an accurate movie version with Elijah Wood in the title roll. *nods* Yes... that would be lovely.

LOL, so true, so very true!! Get on with it, Burton!!! :P

I read it... it was my first Oscar Wilde read and I was thoroughly impressed by his writing and wit, however, the plot itself was.. so so... I found the beginning quite long, mostly because I knew what was coming and wanted to speed forward... well, in fact I think the poor book was killed by my expectations. I knew too much of the plot before I picked it up and I had already imagined exactly how it was going to unfold...
Dorian Grey annoyed me!
But I wish I had read it with an open mind. All the time I felt like yelling "Don't do that" or "Now go tell her for crying out loud". :-)

You MUST!

I am still thinking of it...

Eä, I actuallty found the whole book to be a very quick read. I really liked how everything was established, especially the characters, right off.

But, really, if you didn't find Dorian annoying I should be worried... ;) I was actually having a hard time trying to picture what Dorian looked like at first, but when it started describing his face and his chiseled nose, Elijah Wood came into my mind and I thought he just fit perfectly as the youthful and handsome character.

But I can sympathize with the character while hating him at the same time too.

I have read it and adore the book and the hedonistic ways that are shown in the book. The theme of beauty and purity and all this stuff is written just wonderfully by Oscar Wilde... his words are to die for and I simply love it...

It is a movie, at least it is going to be in the UK with Ben Barnes as the lead title.

That is a weird coincidence... Can't say that I am at all excited though. :( He's not Dorian at all. I don't even find him remotely handsome. Is he going to have blonde hair? Weird... And Colin Firth as Lord Henry? No... no... no... though I suppose he might not be so bad. We shall see.

I like it though that they chose a British cast, it will seem true to the books, but yea I thought that Dorian was supposed to have blond hair, and honestly I think BB is a bit too old for the part, I really saw Dorian as a younger lad... but then again that is just my vision. I wish I could see it though >< grumbles at the states not developing the movie

Lol, Frodofan... yeah, I guess Dorian is supposed to be annoying but there's gotta be something that I can identify with.. or at least to make me understand his motives.. but yeah, it is an interesting read because of the themes.. and it was scary!! Am I the only one who did NOT want him to look at the painting of fear of what he might see?? I had to read that part in daylight!! And the end... *shudder* uh, I know I scare easily... :P

Dorian is supposed to be young and blond... Ben Barnes isn't blond in the movie?? Shame...
Elijah might be a good choice, if he worked on his accent.. I imagine all the characters to be VERY British and posh sounding! :-)

[Pandora, What a pretty Legolas banner! Gosh, I'm so jealous of that bow!!]

I think Elijah could get the accent. He sort of has a british flair to his voice in LotR.

Yes, I do like the idea of a British cast. Who knows, it might turn out really cool. I'm sure we'll get to see it here in the states too. I know blockbusters around here get the British films and other foreign films too.

I wanted him to look at the painting and make it convince him to stop! But I knew it would never happen... ;) The ending is cool. I am curious as to what Lord Henry thought of it when he found out though...

I never pay attention to how they describe hair but I imagined him a having brown, to his chin hair and having similar face structure to Ben Barnes, so I think he is a very good choice.
i do love this book very much. I think that this is a very good moral story with a little twist. I didn't think it was scary at all, but i am fascinated with the 'dark' side of things ( though Wilde does swear that an author cannot do so...). I loved how the intimacies and friendships were very much so like what finally got Wilde in trouble( being vague here ).

Yes, the book is very much a personal piece for Wilde...

As for Dorian's looks. He has blonde hair, and I believe blue eyes, a chiseled looking nose (not unlike greek statues) and he is compared to Adonis. I'm not getting my head around why someone chose Barnes for this. :duh: Description is everything.

I dont know but its just the way he holds himself. i thought that that was a very good choice. i had actually pictured Dorian looking alot like Wilde in the way that he always held himself with a small smirk on his face and always holding his head high.

Yeah... I guess I can see him getting the attitude down pretty well. You're right about that. I don't think he has the charisma Dorian needs though. Like the way he captivates everyone he knows... But, again, I could end up being very surprised.

lol, in the movies ANYTHING is possible. I think he'll do just fine. Method acting would do Ben very well. Charm is easily picked up if you learn how to chanel it, and i guess its good wilde never gets into super detailed about how Dorian does charm his victims.
