We're studying some Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice) and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I like the latter. But the former doesn't really do it for me.

Haha, I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't like Jane Austen. My friends and classmates love her stuff, but I find some of it too uppily Victorian, if you know what I mean. Ah well, I'm horribly picky with literature sometimes.

I'm neutral about "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. I think I would have liked it, but I think we overanalyzed it in English class years ago, so the book has lost the visceral appeal to me that less-dissected books have. Same goes with "Things Fall Apart." All those yams, haha. :bye2:

I read Animal Farm for pleasure many years ago and I liked it a lot! But I see what you mean by analysing it too much.
I think I would need to analyse Things Fall Apart a little more. I read it for World Civilisation and had to srite a short essay, which wasn't really doing the book justice...

I want to read Macbeth and Dante.. but I don't think I can ever get through them...

I'm studying horrible Spanish grammar and reading a book called Contraluz in Spanish.... the horror!!!

Everybody else is reading (at least halfway) decent books. I'm still working through FotR, but I love cheesy romance novels. The current one is "In the Highlander's Bed".

Oh yes, lol.

So agonizingly close to the end of Vanity Fair that I can taste it. AGH. Someone go back in time and make Thackeray stop writing this *($*Y$% book, PLEASE. I'm starting to hate it more than Great Expectations, and THAT is a statement in itself. :headwall:

^wow, Anie... is it really that bad? lol

Right now it's The Red Badge of Courage - the book has been ok so far, I guess. Not my favorite book but there are certainly worse ones out there.... at least it holds your interest. :P

lol, well then I think I shall try to steer clear of it... :P unless, of course, I need something to use if wood becomes in short supply. ;)

we read Swift's Gulliver's travels and we are now dealing with "Tom Jones" by Fielding in english literature. We're reading Orazio in latin literature, and Pasini in italian literature. Nothing so interesting by far..

Well, let's see. I'm not in any literature classes, but my History of Terrorism class SHOULD be listed as one. XD *headdesk*

Here is our reading list for that class,

"The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer
"Under Western Eyes" by Joseph Conrad
"Hope Against Hope: A Memoir" by Nadezhda Mandelstam
"Massacre At El Mozote" by Mark Danner
"Jihad: The Rise Of Militant Islam In Central Asia" by Ahmed Rashid
"Messages To The World: The Statements Of Osama bin Laden" by Osama bin Laden

The last three are actually REALLY fascinating and I've actually enjoyed reading them. "Massacre At El Mozote" is beyond gruesome, disturbing, and depressing. :P As heartbreaking as it was to read it, it was a work of complete genius.

The first three, not so much. *HEADDESK* Ha ha ha ha. As a political science student, reading people yammer on about terrorism as being caused by religion and true believers just makes you want to pull out some hair and scream. :P

This week and next I'm reading Dubliners by James Joyce. Eh. It's a collection of short stories about people in Dublin in the early 1900s. I'm sure he's a brilliant writer, but the stories are all full of symbolism and hidden meanings and it's actually not very enjoyable reading. And another thing - "The only demand I make on my readers is that they spend their whole lives studying my works." I mean, WHAT? Yeah, as if! So after I read that he'd said that I didn't like him much.

The Forest House by Marion Zimmer Bradley... prequel to the The Mists of Avalon, which I have read also. :)
... and of course... Macbeth.

Crime and Punishment. Dude. Serious craziness. This guy definitely has schizophrenia and probably multiple personality disorder. But it's not a bad book. I'm excited to see how it ends.

Plus, we just did Dante's Inferno and it was SWEET.
