I first attempted to read LotR when I was 8.. Gave up.. Tried again when I was 10.. Then again at 11, then 13.. Finally managed to read it all when I was 14.

Got to bear in mind that I'm dyslexic and dyspraxic so it was a struggle.
(I'm not a slow reader by any stretch of the imagination but some writing styles I find a lot harder to read than others.. Tolkien is one..)

Yeah I am re-reading them now...I don't usually read myself unless its something i want to read, I hate all the good literature books I'm forced to read. I love the Redwall series by Brian Jacques though, anyone heard of 'em?

Definitely! I was always browsing the fantasy section of my local library for new a new read and for some reason I always skipped those three LotR books. Every once in a while I would pick them up and flip through the pages but it just never caught my interest. The cover was dull and didn't manage to convey the greatness of its content to a 11-year old me.

But finally after having watched FotR I got my own copy and it was so much easier to read it now that I had gotten an introduction to the story and plot. It was still difficult to get through the chapters that are not in the movie like Tom Bombadil because I wasn't familiar with Middle-earth and the characters yet but I got through. :)

I tried it a lot of times, but all those times I tried to read everything the translator had written before the actual story and that was so boring I kept putting it aside. Eventually, I just turned to the first chapter =] After that, it was merely a bit difficult.

My mom had wanted me to read FotR at a rather young age (somewhere between 8 and 10... I don't recall exactly). I started to read the introductory chapter and was immediately bored to death. I didn't actually pick up the book again, which was collecting dust on my shelf, until I was 15 and at an absolute loss for something to read. I stuck with it for that reason, and after I got through the first bit, it was a wonderful book. :)

Not really, I read it as a teenager, and I have pretty advanced reading so when I got really interested, I would stay up all night reading it until my dad told my to go to sleep.

A little. Tolkien is very into descriptions and I rather am into dialogues. So it was like clash of titans. But it wasdifficult to not like the books! When I read it once again, it was not hard at all.

I thought it was a little hard, I first read it when I was 11. But I cope well with slow parts in books, plus I was curious to see how it would turn out. I agree with you, Cara. The second time I read it (12) was much easier.

I read the Fellowship of The Ring in finnish which is my native language so it was easy for me. But now I've read the whole trilogy and I'm planning to read it in english.

I read the books when I was 12, but I had seen the first movie already and was very motivated to learn more about the story, so that may have helped. I finished all three in one week when reading in my native language, but it took me longer to re-read them in English (but so worth the time/effort ;-) )

Well...considering the fact that I went into kindergarten barely knowing the alphabet and less than halfway through the year I was reading The Chronicles of Narnia...
No, it wasn't hard for me. It was one of the five best books I've ever read!! Those five being The Silmarillion (which I'm still working on), The Hobbit, FotR, TTT, and RotK.

Hello, I'm new here haha. To be honest, I've only read the first book...and that was in High School! But I do remember battling a little bit because there was so much happening. Keeping up was tricky for me. There is a lot of detail in the book! I want to read it again, and I must read the other books too!

I wouldn't say that it was hard to read really, just that it took me a good deal longer to read than books of that size usually do. Which I loved.

It was a little harder for me because I am a fast reader and it is hard to read Tolkien fast, otherwise you won't understand it!

FotR wasn't hard to read for me, I actually read it quite fast the first time. I spent more time reading TTT instead :P
