All of Tolkien's books are filled with beautiful poetry. Do you have a favorite song or poem? I really love all of them, but one of my favorites is the song Sam sings in Cirith Ungol...above all shadows rides the Sun and stars forever dwell...I think it's really beautiful.
So, which are your favorites? Feel free to post the actual poem as well as telling us which it is.

Ooooh this is difficult!!
Most likely the Elf-songs... the elven hymns to Elbereth Gilthoniel, and Legolas' song of the sea..

I think I like those in The fellowship of the Ring the most, especially Tom Bombadils songs....

I think my favorite is In Western Lands.
I also like In the Willow-Meads of Tasarinan, Upon the Hearth the Fire is Red, and Bilbo's Last Song.

I have always loved the Lament for the Rohirrim:
"Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing? Where now the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing? Where is the hand on the harp string, and the red fire glowing? Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing? They have passed like rain on the mountains, like wind in the meadow. The days have gone down in the West, behind the hills, into Shadow. Oh who shall gather the smoke from the dead wood burning, Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?"
This one seriously makes me so sad...

Hm... see I am not fond of humourous characters in stories... at least not in fantasy stories that have serious themes through them...

Hmmm, I can't really remember many poems or songs, but there were several Elven ones Legolas sang. I guess Elven songs and poems would be very beautiful. I don't really remember many. What about the song Pippen sang to Denethor in the RotK? Does that count?

Pippin's song was a variation on a song from the book, so yes, it does count!
I love The Old Walking Song:
"Around the corner there may wait
a new road or a secret gate
and though I oft have passed them by
a day may come at last when I
will take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon, East of the Sun."
It's so sad... it encompasses not only Frodo's journey, but also the departure of the Elves, and the magic leaving Middle-earth..

I love Legolas' song of the sea, to me it seems so sad......
To the Sea, to the Sea! Gulls white are crying,
The wind is blowing and the foam white is flying,
To West far, in-which Sun is falling.
Ship grey, ship grey, do-you-hear them calling,
Voices of my-people that passed before me?
I-will-leave, I-will-leave forest that bore me;
for last days ours and falling years ours.
I-will-traverse Sea wide lonely sailing.
Waves are long on Last Shore falling,
Voices are sweet in Isle Lost calling
In Lonely Island, in Elvenhome that Men did-not-see,
In-which leaves fall-not: land of people mine for-ever!
I guess you could consider this a poem. Galadriel says it to Legolas, and I think this is sad too.
Legolas Greenleaf long under tree
In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea!
If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore,
Thou heart shall then rest in the forest no more!

Yes, this was what I meant by Legolas's songs (Elvish maybe?) being very good. It is sad. If only I knew the tune.

I really like Sam's troll song from FotR. I used to know off by heart but now I can't remember much [/i]

I love the Old Walking Song and Legolas' song. And don't forget 'All that is gold does not glitter..' Love that one too...
And the Rings poem is also very powerful. And I love this one too:
I sit beside the fire and think
of all that I have seen,
of meadow-flowers and butterflies
in summers that have been;
Of yellow leaves and gossamer
in autumns that there were,
with morning mist and silver sun
and wind upon my hair.
I sit beside the fire and think
of how the world will be
when winter comes without a spring
that I shall ever see.
For still there are so many things
that I have never seen:
in every wood and every spring
there is a different green.
I sit beside the fire and think
of people long ago,
and people who will see a world
that I shall never know.
But all the while I sit and think
of times there were before,
I listen for returning feet
and voices at the door.

Pippins song to Denethor:
Home is behind the World ahead
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadow to the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight
Mist and Shadow, Cloud and shade
Hope shall fade
Hope shall fade
