Alice kept a tight hold to the gun in her hand, refusing to stow it away in her handbag just in case she needed it. They were ushered to a carriage, where one of the men offered her an arm to help her up, as if they were headed to some society event instead of almost certain death...

No, she couldn't afford to think that way. If they had wanted to kill her and Sarah, they would have done it already. That, at least, was a comfort--that they would keep them around as long as they remained useful. Alice just had to make sure that they stayed that way.

She refused the man's help, instead hoisting herself up into the carriage on her own. Sarah and the other girl joined her, and Alice whispered into her maid's ear, "Whatever happens, we stay together. I promise." Sarah, somehow, was involved in this whole ordeal as well, otherwise the men surely would not have allowed her to come along. Besides, Hazel was fond of the maid, at any rate. If anything happened to her, Alice didn't want to be the one to break the news to her sister.

"All right, you've wasted enough of our time stalling," Alice said as the men got into the carriage. "Tell us everything."

Rosamund sulked.

She tried to struggle as they bodily forced her into the carriage, but the weakness from her bout of unconciousness was still with her, and she had no choice but to give in.

She didn't want to hear anything about this craziness, but it appeared that she would have to.

She sank back into the velvet cushions and shut her eyes. Maybe they would think she wasn't listening.

(Haha, now I can write a post that will make you all interested in this once again! :))

"Tell you everything?" Mr. Remmingworth asked with a slight chuckle. "That, my dear, would be very unwise. Ah well, if you insist. All four of you are coming with me to Kent, whereupon you will be united with your families. However, their safety is not fully guaranteed until you finish the task I have asked you to complete. Which I am sure you will do, because your precious family's lives are in jeopardy. I am, I reckon, quite lucky to not have a family to take care of. Having one only complicates matters, and only gets in the way of greatness. But I digress," the man broke off with a slight cough. "Miss Pennyworth, I would advise you not to make any rash, bold movements. Your sister is at an even greater risk, but that risk may be lessened by choosing just one option." He reached into his jacket, drawing out a map which he gave to Sarah. "Please look over this as it holds the key to your future, and your success. My associates and I have narrowed down the possible locations of the Medallion to just one place only, but sadly, we have not been able to retrieve the Medallion ourselves because of a pesky little enchantment. Those that can enter must only be young women such as yourselves, or young children. The previous owner of the Medallion was a woman, I believe, and wanted nothing to do with men. But never mind that. You are the only ones that can retrieve this item for us. To further complicate matters, the location requires a blood sacrifice. A blood sacrifice of a disabled child."

Alice raised an eyebrow, struggling to keep her face devoid of any other emotion, although her shoulders shook as her true feelings threatened to burst through at any moment. Finally she could hold it in no longer.

Alice Pennyworth burst into raucous, unladylike laughter.

"You honestly expect me to believe that rubbish?" she demanded through her giggles. "That has to be a joke. A blood sacrifice of a disabled child--what is that? That's too ridiculous to be true, that's what that is! Only can be handled by women, hmm? And you just happen to need a disabled child? What a coincidence--that's just what you've got! Three terrified women and a boy with a crutch. Please! If just one of us had been born a man you'd be saying it required a blood sacrifice of a dandy nobleman with a top hat and a notch on his bedpost. You're lying through your teeth to trick us." She gave a snort of derision. "I want the real truth, if you please."

(In which I enjoy writing as the evil guy way too much)

Remmington leaned in closer, his eyes bristling with anger. "What of your sister?" he said softly. "What of her, Miss Pennyworth, why are you coming to the conclusion that the boy has to die? Wouldn't it better for me to threaten you, and your family than some filthy street urchin you only met yesterday? I have you, I have all of you in my power and I can threaten you anyway you like, under point of death that you complete this job for me. We have powers beyond your wildest dreams, Miss Pennyworth. It would not be wise to push us."

He sat back, and then asked conversationally, "So who do you pick? Your dear sister Hazel, or the boy?"

Sarah sat quietly next Lady Alice and the other woman, her head bowed and tears still trickling down her cheeks. Alice's words had not reassured her and everything that this Mr. Remmington had told them made her panic even more. But for now she tried to master those emotions and tried to remain composed, although her hands, in which she held the map that was given to her, were shaking. As far as she could tell they would have to leave London and travel miles and miles to the north. Leaving London.. It was an almost incomprehensible thought. She had never left London before..
Sarah abruptly looked up when Remmington mentioned Lady Hazel and she looked at the man with an unyielding look on her face, which she sometimes used to tell off a footman or maid. "Killing might something you are specialized in, Sir. But that is something we will not do.. You are the criminal here, so just find a way around it.."
