There should be a male voice actor too, because a woman reading the men's lines would be rather weird.

Good news! The male actor I have in mind agreed to do it for free, and I've started training him.

Sorry that I've been gone for so long - my classes were taking a toll on me and I had to stop my internet activity in order to keep up. I'm on Spring Break now... and our voice actor has a cold. Of course. *sigh*

I'm going to be sparse shortly, because of SakuraCon and classes resuming after that, but I should be about with lots of free time to spend on the Elvish section in May.

Lots of free time... lol... didn't happen. I'd been studying Quenya for a while, and realized that my Quenya phrasebooks desperately needed to be completely rewritten, and I figured I could do this at the same time that I did the switch over to a database (which is going very smoothly so far, except I'm bogged down in translating hundreds of Quenya phrases and correcting Sindarin homework. Then I got contacted by MyMiddle-earth and that's been eating time.

I've learned a lot about Quenya phonology since I started this little adventure, BTW, and am correcting a few errors in the Quenya phonetic transcriptions. Expect to see the corrected version very soon - I'm working on it right now. (well not right right now, 'cuz I'm typing this message right now, but you get the idea.)

I saw the start of the new version, and I am pleased to see that it's finally moving along!

I'll also be adding a link to a new, massive Tolkien language-dictionary database that is great to use: Parf Edhellen

And one new phonetic symbol, a /ʲ/. This cute little guy is for a sound found in words like "cute", it's the sound between the C and U. The error that I had made in the Quenya transcriptions was that I didn't treat that sound like the tiny bit of palatalization that I should have, but a full blown consonant that could affect the stress patterns. Luckily, there are very few Quenya translations that need fixing.

And done. To whomever is putting this up, might I suggest using a slightly larger font size, and no bolding for the Phonetic transcription? The best font for IPA support is Times New Roman, (though I'm not seeing any characters messed up by the font, just something to consider).

I think that the best way to organize the new Elvish section is like this:

Introduction to Elvish - the place that people land when they click on "Elvish" in the menu.

On the side menu:
Interview with David Salo
Pronunciation Guide
Useful Links
Elvish Movie Dialogue
-Fellowship of the Ring
-The Two Towers
-Return of the King
Weapon Inscriptions
Elvish Soundtrack Lyrics
-Fellowship of the Ring
-The Two Towers
-Return of the King
Elvish in the Books
Phrasebooks
-Sindarin
-Quenya

I'd be glad to put it up, but...what exactly am I putting up? Do you have a document or something, or did you just edit directly with the website? (I'm not a frequent visitor to that section; I don't know if it's been changed.)

I have a rough page that I've made so the scripts, with all of the proper diacritics and IPA symbols can be copy-pasted by using one's browser's "View Source" function.

Nurr, I copied the main page and a few others and placed them in a separate folder with all the new changes--I think we were going to fix all the pages first, and then put them up on the site. Do you want me to keep working on this? School's out, so I have more time now. :)

That would be great if you kept with it, that way you know what's going on. :P *dumps into Harthad's hands and flees*

Woot! Let's get this done!

I'm working on a 101 Quenya phrasebook to match the 101 Sindarin Phrasebook.

By the way, I noticed something on the bottom of the page...

Quote:
The following links are broken:
The Seat of Kings
Ardalambion (update to: http://www.uib.no/People/hnohf/
Mirkwood - Home of the Elves
Muse doesn't have the article about Elvish up online anymore (or at least not so that I could find it), so that's a bust.

The links for David Salo and my website are the same, which is really misleading. I have conversed with David Salo a few times online, but he doesn't contribute to my website at all. It'd be better to make his link http://groups.yahoo.com/group/elfling/ which is his Elvish discussion group.

Finally, when I'm done with this section, the only credits will be David Salo for the interview, me for rewriting it all, and Gwaith-i-Phethdain for the Elvish movie dialogue translations and analysis.

I have finally finished 101 Quenya Phrases. You can take this little phrasebook and use it here. It plus the 101 Sindarin Phrases is many more Elven phrases than the current phrasebook has.

How's the progress on the Elvish section?

I haven't been working on it all that much, sorry. :( But today I will definitely work on it.

EDIT: I'm having trouble with the font colour. When I try to change the code, it doesn't show up. It might be because Dreamingfifi used the <p> class instead of the <div>, which was what Arwen had been using. Help, anyone? :confuzzled:

And I'm really sorry I haven't been working on this. I've been doing my play, and once school starts up at the end of August, I think someone will have to take over from me.

The voice-actor situation... I inquired about using the studio on campus, and they said "no" to put it lightly. They don't let non-music majors touch that recording equipment.

But, I got my hands on a decent microphone and a nice quiet place. So, in September/end of August, I'll be recording all the lines.

Do we want the phrasebook lines too?

@Harthad: Did you figure out what was wrong with the code? Or do we need to call upon tech support?
Also, could you give us an overview of what you have done, what you intend to do and where you'd like someone else to take over for you so we ensure that all your work is being saved and taken care of. :-)

@dreamingfifi: That's good, we should get this moving.
