When me and my friend watched all three films at the end we watched the pictures and started shouting at the names. We were so sad that it had ended we watched it all over again!

oh boy, here I go, dredging up an old thread because I want to reply! I hope this doesn't became a habit for me!
anyway, does anyone think RotK was both the best movie and book? it's my absolute favorite. it's just so climactic. the actors' performances - namely Elijah & Sean - were amazing and so poignant. the movie and book really flesh out their entire friendship - from them sticking together, to separating, to essentially saving each other in the end, to Frodo's recovery and Sam's really sweet smile, to the painful goodbye when Frodo leaves - it's such a vast amount of different emotions, and when I watch RotK (or read the book), both times I get a strong sense of all those emotions. That's something I really love. And then there's the friendship of Legolas and Gimli and Aragorn, and how they're willing to sacrifice so much for the two hobbits, especially when it means fighting till the end... again, the things going on are so complex and beautiful. In my opinion, RotK is the "fullest" of the three, having the most meaning, especially when it comes to human life too. Tolkien had the ability to gain your sympathy, trust, friendship, loyalty, and love for his characters in writing, which takes extraordinary talent to communicate through the written word. And Peter Jackson and the actors were able to take those sentiments and portray them exactly as intended, only on the screen. With both words and visuals, I think RotK really stands out.

I'd say a lot more, but I think that's good for now. ;-) I'll stop talking to myself!

I love how the music swells and just adds amazing depth to what's happening on screen. Howard Shore just got it SO right. :) I also like, well, everything, I guess! Haha.

I wasn't as sad as some of you were when I finished it, and that's either because I'm emotionally disabled, or because I didn't fully understand the ending and it's meaning then and therefore it didn't touch me as deeply as it should have. I understand it now, but it took me over the course of a few days or so, and it's impact came in short, small gasps rather than one big boom, if that makes any sense.
That, and also the fact that I knew LOTR wasn't going anywhere, and there was no reason (in my point of view) to be sad or disappointed. There were still many roads to travel LOTR-wise. :) :) :)

I wasn't so sad either since I have a pretty good control of my emotions (except anger). Although I think the ending was better than a regular 'And they all lived happily ever after'. They did probably live happily ever after and such but it gives a nice tinge of sadness. And I don't think Tolkien Could've ended it any better.

This was the best ending for the book, but rotk last chapter is my favourite part and, though i've read it now about 8 times, i still allways cry. The first time i read it, i cried, when Frodo said goodby to Sam, and when i finally stopped crying, i started to cry again at Sam's last words. Whaen i finished it, read the last chapter again straight away, then ran to my parents shouting "the ending is sooo goood! The ending is sooo goood!".

The ending was simply too beautiful to bear it. When I was reading the part between ending and death of Saruman, I was like "the heroism of this part is the best part of the book".
I know I will back to Lord of the Rings but this ending...ends for me everything. I feel like after long journey taht eventually has good finish.

It's kinda the same for me for both book and movies. First I realize I am getting toward the end and I get sad. Then when I actually finish it, I have a hard time coming back to reality. I just want it to keep going and going!

I read/finished reading Return of the King in the 6th grade at like midnight. I cried my eyes out! The scouring of the Shire was such an amazing chapter. However, I hated (and still do) the very end when Frodo and Sam go to the Undying Lands. Since, I have mentally skipped/rewrote that part in my mind. I am glad that Galadriel got to go back, however.

I haven't ended it yet, but I know I'm going to be mourning that the journey was over. Until then, I'm afraid to finish; I don't want it to be over. And so, I will scramble for the Hobbit, all the video games, the Lost Tales, the Silmarillion, and just about anything else that will help it live on.

I'll probably read it once or twice every year too.

The end is heartbreaking. I loved to read it all over, when I had a chance. It puts me in this special mood that I can smile and cry at the same time.

I was sad, too. Plus, I was overwhelmed by it. I loved it, though.

I couldn't have put it better. I have so many emotions at that point, I don't even know how to describe it.
