Not at all. I got hooked very easily. Not to mention that it was dwelling into the known world since I saw the movie at first ;)

I was nine when I first saw the films and I attempted to read FotR shortly after watching them, and yes, I found it difficult to follow. I don't think I got very far because Tolkien's language was too hard to grasp at that age. I picked up the books again my first year of high school and I got through the trilogy just fine then. ^^

I was seventeen when I picked the books. Maybe that's why I didn't find them difficult. I was bookworm back then as I am now. If I reda Fellowship as nine years old, probably I would npt sink into the story as fast.

No. For me, I had just finished The Hobbit and was hungry for more, so I read through the six books of The Lord Of The Rings the first time rather steadily over a couple-three months. Being I was borrowing the paperbacks from a friend, I caught up to him by the time I was ready to read Return of the King. He had slowed down in his reading, so I checked-out an old 1950's vintage hardback from the library and finished it. It still had the large fold-out map behind the back cover and I spent days just going over the known terrain. After finishing and wanting more, I combed through the prologue and the appendices and absorbed all the lore and history and started to learn the Tengwar, Calenders, etc. Couldn't get enough!

No. I first read LoTR in 1983 in the then-current German translation (there is a newer one which has some serious issues in tone) after having seen the Ralph Bakshi 1978 semi-cartoon (which only went as far as the Battle of Helm’s Deep). I only vaguely remember being a bit puzzled at the references to ancient kings and their remnants (not sure if I immediately realized this meant the rangers and Aragorn). When I finally got my English paperback in 1984 or early 1985, I roared through it in a single weekend, including a 19-hour binge from early Saturday morning to (even earlier) Sunday morning, taking me from some place in Fellowship to some place in RoTK.

What I had been told before reading is that there are parts of Fellowship “one has to slog through” or words to that effect. And people I talked to in later years seem to have given up slogging around about Tom Bombadil very often …
