^ Same here. Concerning the topic, though, I would say that no one is THE hero. there is no such thing in these types of books, IMO. All the characters are equals in my point of view. Hence why I have no real favorite charcter or least favorite charcter. I dislike categorizing charcters like that. It makes the whole thing seem simple and dull then.

Well, I would say Frodo is. Although Sam suffered a lot. Tolkien wrote that Frodo was going through a nightmare. Of course Frodo couldn't have gotten so far without Sam, but Sam would have been corrupted before Frodo.

For me, Sam is the real hero. Yes, this is Frodo who is Ringbearer but Sam shows much more courage and dedication than Frodo. Sam is afraid, don't have to do all these things, he wasn't chosen, but he does them because of love for Frodo.

I remember going to see Sean Astin at Dragon Con in Sep. of 2010, and he said something around the lines of people always tell him that Sam is the real hero! And that Frodo was nothing without him. But he thought they should really give Frodo a lot more credit than that. A lot. Sam was willing to give up his life, but Frodo had to basically give up his soul. /paraphrasing Something like that (it was a while ago). I really agreed with him. Sam made the most obvious immediate sacrifices, and he was definitely important to Frodo and Frodo could never, ever have made it without him and his friendship, support, and love. But Sam could never, no matter what, have carried the Ring the whole way there, either, so I think saying he's "mostly" the reason the Ring was destroyed is unfair. (Not to mention, though the quest was hard, I doubt that caring for Frodo himself felt like a burden to him. He genuinely did love him and wanted him to be well.) Nobody could have done it all alone; of course Frodo needed Sam. But I think that because of his unhappiness, weakness, and the drain the Ring was on him, a lot of people make the mistake of thinking that Frodo did practically nothing, that he wasn't dedicated, that he wasn't courageous. All, I think, are entirely wrong. He had to be incredibly strong of will and character to make it all the way to Mordor with the Ring hanging from his neck, in that much pain, living in terror. No-one could have resisted its' seduction entirely (and Sam could never have resisted it as he did). He was chosen, but he also made the choice. And he stuck to it as far as anyone could have. Farther, even. To me Frodo is the "real" hero, I guess, if one has to be chosen (I do think saying one or the other, this or that, just seems like cheapening the story, dumbing it down), because his sacrifices weren't immediately apparent to everyone else, but they stayed with him for the rest of his life. He never even remotely resembled his old self after the war. He was... broken.

I think they are both heroes but in different way. Frodo kept the Ring and was put inder blows of it and suffered the most. He came from wealthy life in Shire to miserable pain of Ring life. I think no one would agree for that. Sam is other side of the coin. Without him, Frodo wouldn't survive or if yes, the Ring would won over him.
Together, they make a pair that saved the Middle-Earth.

Quoting Anie Surion: (And really, everyone in LOTR is a hero in some ways, even Gollum.) I totally agree. I think Sam and Frodo are heroes in equal share, but if I had to choose, I would say that Sam was the hero.

They both are real heroes. Sam would not make without Frodo and Frodo definitely wouldn't make it without Sam. They both were helping each other in the journey. Of course Sam showed more loyality and strenght but I doubt he would not fall under the rule of Ring if he was alone.
But I votede for Sam eventually.

Gollum! Without Gollum, Frodo couldn't destroy the Ring.
But Sam, if I have to choose from one of the two. Without Sam, Frodo couldn't have gone through anything.
