Does the book give us an exact number on the armies (On all sides)

If so, does anyone have any idea how accurate the movie was towards the actual number.

I have always wondered this....

To my knowledge it doesn't give exact numbers other than there were 30 Dunedain Rangers that rode with Halbarad (31 Rangers) plus the two sons of Elrond (33). I think it is mentioned that only 600 spears could be mustered by Rohan too.

I have read a few speculations on the numbers over the years though. One has to wonder how many people could Minas Tirith hold, both comfortably, and at a maximum. You figure in the women and children, and then guess at the numbers of soldiers Gondor could field. The armies of Mordor would be much larger.

One of the best speculations would be in Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle Earth. It has this written about the Pelennor Fields (page 151-152):

Total Estimated Forces of Gondor and Rohan = 11,250

(with Imrahil and southern captains along with Minas Tirith guard - stated at 2000 - and the 6000 cavalry)

Total Estimated Forces of Mordor = Minimum 45,000

(20,000 stated from Barad-dur and Minas Morgul, 18,000 Haradrim, and 7000 from Rhun and Khand)

I will give Karen the benifit of the doubt and assume she did a lot of research on this. To me they do seem like good estimations and appropriate numbers.

I have that book, and thought it was really good! It could be pretty close to those numbers.

In the movie, pj's goal was to create a giant battle scene. With that motive in mind, they probably just put as many as would fit on the screen, making sure to have the good guys hopelessly outnumbered until the end, cause the odds are never even in a movie adaptation of a fantasy series. They also were kind of pressed for time animating that scene, so we can bring our estimate to: as many as they could possibly animate in the incredibly short amount of time they had.

Lol well I guess that would make sense in a way. I have just always wondered what a battle of that size would actually look like. Especially being a writer myself. I have written battle scenes with thousands of men on each side, but as a writer who has never seen a battle of that sort anywhere beyond a movie I always wonder how my imagination does compared to the real deal.

I feel Like PJ did a decent job of portraying the battle scenes but I was thinking if I could get a rough figure it would help solidify in my mind a general idea of what that many men would look like on a battle field clashing blades.

IM SORRY HANASIAN!!! It bugs me too, I know! Jax asked a question and i answered it. I really debated whether or not to answer that post, but I saw an opportunity to bash the movies because parts of them were dumb (not all mind you, but some). I'm sorry I inflated your pet peeve, please forgive me! :-(

You are forgiven my dear Héalic. Sorry about being cranky about it. I wasn't in a very good mood this morning. I am saddened that the tale as told in the books is fast becoming a footnote to the tale told in the movies, mainly because people don't read, or find its too hard to read the books, or try and find them uninteresting compared to the movies, or feel they don't need to read the books because they know everything based on repeated watching of the movies. I am tired of bucking this trend here, and elsewhere. It's akin to being those Gondorian soldiers at the gate when it was broken. I think I'll take the mace to the head and the spear to the chest, and fade into the west with my beloved books. My apologiesto everyone for being such a downer here.

The original question was actually to the number the books gave and whether the movie was accurate to that number.

You can't hardly discuss the issue without mentioning the movies at all, and it would hardly fit in the "Movie" section any more so than it would fit here.

I simply wanted to know the numbers in the books (if they were given) and how the movie portrayed them. (Whether accurate or not)

I totally understood your question Jax. I would be curious as well.

... like I said... don't mind me, and have at it.
I found a Sacred Books site where the books are discussed free of the existence of the PJ fanfics, so I won't bother you all about it again. :)

I don't mind the book discussions. In fact I rather enjoy them a lot. I admitedly am not the most knowledgable in the book content so I do often come with mamy ideas from the movies. I do, however much prefer the book content.

This particular question was just a question inguaging whether PJ actually kept this aspect true to the book or not.

Well, I guess I just saw it the other way around since the ultimate question was decided due to book content. *shrugs*

Each to their own. It wouldn't hurt my feelings for it to be in the movie section, I just didn't consider it being more suitable at the time of posting.

The way I see it is the Books are the ultimate source written by the creator of the tale. J.R.R. Tolkien. Peroid. Full Stop.

The movies are an interpretation of that tale by Peter Jackson, one guy who portrayed what he thought of it on a movie screen. Anything that pertains to the movies that Peter Jackson produced is not a part of the Books that J.R.R. Tolkien wrote, nor will they ever be. The tale as written by J.R.R. Tolkien is, to me, sacred, and is separate from the movie fan fiction that Peter Jackson produced, so I fume when the fan-fic is constantly being brought into book discussions. But as I said.. it is what it is here on AU, and I have learned to accept that in 2017. If I want to talk books only, I go elsewhere where the admins see things like I do and forbid mentions of the movie in book forums. Like I said elsewhere, I will try to keep my crankiness off of this place and accept that AU is a movie site where the movies reign supreme and the books take a secondary role. It is a bit redundant to have separate movie and book forums here really, but that is cool. The powers that be seem to be for the most part absent here anyway, but I'm pretty sure from the beginning this was primarily a movie fan site.

In light of that, I get the whole reasoning of this thread, and I have apologised for disrupting it. It's all good. :)
